Welcome to my BBS Dizzy, and hello world! to everyone else!
Great stuff. Lately he's been, among other things, resuscitating a Bendix vacuu
tube computer from the 1950s.
There's a Youtube channel I've been super enjoying lately called "Usagi Electric".Yeah I'm a huge fan of this guy and really looking forward to seeing more of the Bendix. I've quite liked the videos he did on the Ti99/4, I really felt for him when he was troubleshooitng the Ti99! He's pretty good at explaining stuff, like the Vacuum tube computer he's been making...normally that kind of stuff would got straight over my head, but I manage to follow along...mostly.

Agreed. I mean, it's from System Operator. Just like how GIF is Graphics Interchange Format. I don't understand how people get Sigh-Sop or JIF from those... It's SysOp and GIF.Next question? Siss-op or SISE-op?
The only correct answer is Siss.

When I first started BBSing and I saw "sysop" and didn't know what it meant, I thought it was "sigh-sop" because of the Y.. But then I learned it's short for "system operator" and its proper pronunciation.
As far as GIF, most of the people I've known pronounce it like "JIF", so that's just how I've pronounced it. And I've heard the creator of the GIF format says that's the way to pronounce it.
I don't know why some people get so upset about how GIF is pronounced.. English tends to be an inconsistent language. For instance, why is the word
"vineyard" typically pronounced "vin-yeerd" rather than like the two separate words "vine" "yard"?

You're right on sysop, but wrong on GIF. The guy who invented GIF says it's pronounced "jiff", so jiff it is. <shrug>

Lots of inventors have been wrong about their inventions. The slinky was meant to stabilize equipment on ships. Frisbees were pie containers. Play-Doh was made to clean wallpaper.

The GIF guy was wrong about how it's pronnounced. :)

I don't think thta means the inventors were 'wrong' about their inventions though. It's just that the invention was intended for one thing and people started using it for something else. But I don't think you can argue with the inventor/creator about what they intended.

it was stupid to expect people to pronounce gif as JIF. especially when there was a jif format a few years later. why didn't he choose jif? oh because it stands for graphics? graphics is hard G.

So you're saying the jif format came LATER, but it's GIF that shouldn't have been pronounced that way first? "jif" is how I've always heard most people pronounce it. And I actually wasn't aware of the jif format until you mentioned it recently.
those... It's SysOp and GIF.

Supposedly the creator of the format says it's pronounced "JIF". He's obviously a nut bar.

The inventors pronounced GIF as "jiff", then in my book, "jiff" is right. No debate about it.
The Qt inventors apparently switched the pronounciation from "cue-tee" to "cute" at some point. So I'm trying (hard) to follow suit.
