Does Mystic run fine on a new M2 mac ? Has anyone testing this install ?

    Thats a good question.

I would need an M1/M2 hardware to make a native version, so for now one does not exist for Mystic. I did receive a Netmail from someone offering to help me
with M1 Mac access but I haven't had a chance to follow up with them yet.

The new Macs have something called Rosetta which will allow Intel Mac applications to run on the M processors. Its possible the Mystic macOS Intel version could work using that, but I haven't heard of anyone trying it yet.

Ok, thanks for the feedback. I may be going with a new M2 Mac Mini in the near future. If so, I will see how the existing version runs on it. If
it doesn't I will wait until someone gets you access to compile and testing

    Hello Byte,

Speaking from experience, the problem with running Mystic from any Mac
is that door games won't run.

That's a bummer. On linux there are a few ways to run old dos doors but I have no experience with a Mac.

I couldn't even get the built-in BlackJack to work.

That's odd. the BlackJack game is not a door, it is a script that Mystic runs itself. Do you see any error messages when you try to run it.

And most of the good door games run in DOS. I suppose a workaround
would be to use the game servers out there...

Yes, the game servers would work. Isn't it amazing the number and variety of truly great doors that were written in '95ish, that we are still running today?

Can you run doors with source that were designed to run on linux? apam wrote a couple of doors (recently) called Galactic Dynasty and For Honour (like but not
the same as L.O.R.D.). Both are InterBBS capable and run nicely here.

apam's doors run in Windows also. I wonder if the source would build on your Mac, but I don't know.

Thats the problem with any BBS on Mac. Its too bad there isn't a good DOS emulator for doors.

I think this is the easiest solution for those who'd want to run on a Mac. The other possibility would maybe be running an old 32-bit windows in a VMware.

You may be correct on some of that, yes. Most of the mods I had running on
my Mystic BBS before were self-coded in mpl. Some of theme the idea came

This was Mystic on Linux at the time. I haven't run it on MacOS yet. But
I think I should be able to make most of everything I had working on Mac
as well. I guess maybe I shall find out. However, I may have to look a different direction if I cannot help figure out what causes Mystic's
QWK mail handling to be so poor. Three Mystic BBS's I've tried to rely
solely on QWK packets for all message handling have failed. After about
a week or so on each, Mystic loses my last read pointers and I then have thousands of new messsages again. This time, on 20 For Beers, it did that
but also says I have no new messages every time. So I can no longer
    download packets at all.

You can set your download message date for your QWK it should be on the menu, unless 20 beers removed it for some reason.

Quick question: Are you downloading by FTP or from the BBS? I forgot to ask that. The FTP engine is "new" from 2010 or so, and the BBS one is from 1997 ( different code unfortunately).

I did release an unconfirmed fix, but its going to take time for Paulie to upgrade. The newer version has some changes to data files and he is doing some
    offline testing first.

Gotcha. There should be a set message date on the message menu and it works for both QWK and your own BBS last read pointers.

    Here is my theory:

When you download a QWK packet, Mystic starts at your last read message + 1. When the last read was updated, it was setting it as last read + 1. When Mystic's message base packer was packing everything, it found that the last read message was an invalid message number and was resetting it to 0.

I do think its fixed in the "Paulie" build but we'll see. I didn't start with a reproducable issue on my end so I can't be certain.

I've also switched to using a mixture of MultiMail QWK and online Mystic to see
if I can catch the "fixed" version doing the same stuff. I'll be packing the message bases daily as well.

We'll get it sorted out and a new stable release out once its done and Paulie confirms any issues he has regarding file bases is okay!

Paulie runs maintenance very night at midnight, and that doesn't seem to mess up these last read pointers. However, my best guess at the moment
is it seems almost weekly. I am not sure if there is some maintenance

I am wondering if he does a weekly message base pack, which is along the lines of what I recommend at least. I don't recommend people run it nightly because what it does is completely recreates the message bases from scratch based on the existing data. "Pack" isn't really a good word for it but its intensive.

Lets hope its a weekly thing for him and we'll see it fixed in the new one!

I don't know what his upgrade timeline is so it may happen again because he hasn't upgraded yet. I know he wanted to experiment with that build before upgrading because it has some data file changes.

I am not sure if he implemented the new build or not yet. It did happen again after this Sunday night. So it is happening on whatever BBS maintenance he is running weekly. Maybe he will chime in to this message when he sees it and confirm what build he is using and what maintenance he is running weekly.

It doesn't seem like he has implemented the fixed build yet, unfortunately. I have been testing here off and on and there hasn't been any issue yet for me, so I am hoping the new one fixes is.
