• PowerShell No Longer Available for Windows 10

    I haven't used Windows PowerShell for a while.

    Today, I tried Get-Volume, and the results were nothing:

    PS C:\windows\system32> Get-Volume
    PS C:\windows\system32>

    So I tried PS on a Windows 11 machine, and it worked fine.

    I searched online, and the suggestion was to install PS using this command within the command prompt:
    winget install --id Microsoft.PowerShell --source winget

    Same (none)results.

    I dis some more searching, and found this:
    Microsoft supports PowerShell until PowerShell reaches end-of-support or
    the version of Windows reaches end-of-support.

    Since my Windows 10 has reached end-on-support, is there any way to install
    a version of PS that will work on my Windows 10 machine? I'm not
    interested in ESU, and not even sure if that would include the ability to install a working edition of PS.

    There are other ways to find system information.

    Windows 10 22H2 build 19045.7417

    A slightly later build of Win10. I'm on the free ESU schedule ending in
    Oct 2027. There's actually some pending updates, but I paused those
    while I work on some RAM issues.

    Powershell works on my Win10 host even before ESU was offered, so it
    worked on an older Win10 22H2 for me. In an admin command shell, I run
    (there are many ways to load the PS shell):

    powershell

    then run:

    get-host

    to see I have 5.1.19041.7417 of PS. I recall looking at a later version
    of PS, but can't remember why I stuck with the bundled version instead
    of getting a later version. I then ran:

    get-volume

    After a 1-second pause got a list of drives, even those not mounted (no
    drive letter assigned). So, get-volume and loading the PS shell works
    on my Win10 setup.

    When you load the PowerShell shell, what welcome message do you see? I
    see:

    Windows PowerShell
    Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

    Try the new cross-platform PowerShell https://aka.ms/pscore6

    It wants me to upgrade, but, as I said, I tried that, didn't like it for
    some reason or it didn't install, so I stuck with v5 that came bundled
    with Win10.

    If you managed to load the PS shell, entering get-volume should return something even if it didn't compile a list of devices, like a "not
    recognized for a cmdlet name" error.

    I don't need multiple versions of PS, and maybe why I uninstalled the
    latest version since it didn't give me anything. No bang for the buck.
    If the winget method installed a later version, you need to make sure
    you load that version and not the default old version that still exists.
    When I have winget search for the latest available released version of Powershell:

    winget search --id Microsoft.PowerShell --exact

    it shows the latest version is 7.6.7.0, as below:

    PowerShell Microsoft.PowerShell 7.6.5.0 winget

    That won't get rid of the PS5 that you have before, and perhaps the
    version that is failing for you. You'll need to run PS7 to get the new version. Since the new version is installed in a different folder,
    you'll have to use a shortcut that points there.

    "PowerShell 7 doesn't replace Windows PowerShell 5.1. It installs to a
    new directory and runs side-by-side with Windows PowerShell 5.1."

    If that runs, then the shell is running.
    I mean, as soon as it put up that PS prompt, it was working.
    But having it print the table is fun too.

    If "Get-volume" won't run, maybe wmic.exe is malfunctioning.
    Using one of your shells, test it out a bit.

    wmic partition get name,size,index

    wmic diskdrive

    Powershell could depend on a version of dotNET.
    DotNet assemblies have to be recompiled after a
    DotNet update, and you might see a couple "ngen.exe"
    running as well as other things. You might have
    a number of versions of DotNet, but after an update
    of a specific version, ngen will attempt to verify the
    other versions and a kind of "null update" is the
    result. So you might see "busy, blip, blip, blip"
    as the things that don't need maintenance, don't
    get any effort.

    Maybe this is one of those dism/sfc times :-)
    But I don't know whether the shell maintenance
    is covered by such things. It would make sense
    for the effort to be there, I just don't know off
    hand how it is maintained.

    dism /Online /Cleanup-image /RestoreHealth
    Sfc /ScanNow

    If the signing had expired, there might have
    been an entirely different visual result. The calmness
    of your description, suggests a dependency is taking
    a nap.

    When launching PowerShell, I've alwasy gotten the same welcome message as
    you.

    Also, get-host works for me, but get-volume will not respond:

    to see I have 5.1.19041.7417 of PS. I recall looking at a later version
    of PS, but can't remember why I stuck with the bundled version instead
    of getting a later version. I then ran:

    get-volume

    After a 1-second pause got a list of drives, even those not mounted (no
    drive letter assigned). So, get-volume and loading the PS shell works
    on my Win10 setup.

    When you load the PowerShell shell, what welcome message do you see? I

    It wants me to upgrade, but, as I said, I tried that, didn't like it for
    some reason or it didn't install, so I stuck with v5 that came bundled
    with Win10.

    If you managed to load the PS shell, entering get-volume should return something even if it didn't compile a list of devices, like a "not
    recognized for a cmdlet name" error.

    I don't need multiple versions of PS, and maybe why I uninstalled the
    latest version since it didn't give me anything. No bang for the buck.
    If the winget method installed a later version, you need to make sure
    you load that version and not the default old version that still exists.
    When I have winget search for the latest available released version of Powershell:

    winget search --id Microsoft.PowerShell --exact

    it shows the latest version is 7.6.7.0, as below:

    That won't get rid of the PS5 that you have before, and perhaps the
    version that is failing for you. You'll need to run PS7 to get the new version. Since the new version is installed in a different folder,

    new directory and runs side-by-side with Windows PowerShell 5.1."

    Well, how can a C: drive disappear like that ?

    The other utilities show it.

    The evidence suggests this is a storage device prepared
    at an OEM factory. But that's not supposed to matter.
    The other partitions don't have drive letters.
    Some of those partitions, will be using a Hidden
    partition type. C: should not be doing that, and
    C: must always be write-able, or the OS gets cranky
    and shuts down.

    Some branded OEM computers, they have two boot modes,
    they play tricks with the partitions at startup. Again,
    once the OS is operational, none of that should matter
    at that point in time. The hot key for Recovery Mode,
    may be the trigger for that.

    Powershell could depend on a version of dotNET.
    DotNet assemblies have to be recompiled after a
    DotNet update, and you might see a couple "ngen.exe"
    running as well as other things. You might have
    a number of versions of DotNet, but after an update
    of a specific version, ngen will attempt to verify the
    other versions and a kind of "null update" is the
    result. So you might see "busy, blip, blip, blip"
    as the things that don't need maintenance, don't
    get any effort.

    Maybe this is one of those dism/sfc times :-)
    But I don't know whether the shell maintenance
    is covered by such things. It would make sense
    for the effort to be there, I just don't know off
    hand how it is maintained.

    If the signing had expired, there might have

    You should be able to look at that in "services.msc" .

    Look for "Virtual Disk" in the list.

    Mine is stopped too. It is labeled as "Manual".

    When I run Disk Management (right-click Start, menu),
    the vds starts on its own. Part of the reason for that, is
    Disk Management (and diskpart.exe), have to know about
    multiple classnames, more than Get-Volume might be using.
    Like, the status of DynamicDisks has to be checked, to color
    the Disk Management rectangles appropriately.

    And my Get-Volume runs without causing "vds" to start.

    If Disk Management is running, Get-Volume run in
    a Powershell window, seems to run and return the results faster.

    I don't know, I'm not getting a strong feeling here, that VDS is
    important to Powershell. It looks more like a "buddy for Disk Management"

    rely on whatever storage driver your Southbridge is using right now.

    at BIOS level, so I expect this to match. Your Dell, it will be
    whatever Dell wanted it to be for your design (they like RAID-ready
    setups, but a laptop would be a poor choice for such a thing when
    there is only one storage bay). I'm expecting your driver will be
    more fancy than this more or less standard one.

    it looks like Boris doesn't want to pursue the issue.

    In Device Manager, you might want to look at the Driver tab
    and see if it is "storahci.sys" or "IAahci.sys" (an Intel driver).
    In your control panels, Programs and Features, it might tell you
    whether the Intel RST driver was installed or not. The Intel RAID
    driver might drop something which is RAID-ready, and the name
    could then be different. Some RST drivers are only "licensed"
    to work with certain chipsets. So a C600 might be the only chipset
    that supports a certain version of RST paired with it.

    But the thing is, you're failing at the USB stick test, and
    the Intel driver would not affect the response of the USB stick.
    The LLM-AI output, says that an inability to parse the optical
    drive output, could stop all output entirely, but that seems
    far-fetched as a root cause. There's no evidence that the
    slop that pours out of this stuff, can be stopped :-)

    So something about this, a dependency is missing, but what is it ?
    It doesn't smell of VDS here, in testing.

    As that would start "vds" service for you.

    In Device Manager, you might want to look at the Driver tab
    and see if it is "storahci.sys" or "IAahci.sys" (an Intel driver).

    Driver tab shows:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\iaStorAC.sys

    In your control panels, Programs and Features, it might tell you
    whether the Intel RST driver was installed or not.

    Control panel does show that the Intel Rapid Storage Technololy driver is installed.

    The Intel RAID
    driver might drop something which is RAID-ready, and the name
    could then be different. Some RST drivers are only "licensed"
    to work with certain chipsets. So a C600 might be the only chipset
    that supports a certain version of RST paired with it.

    But the thing is, you're failing at the USB stick test, and
    the Intel driver would not affect the response of the USB stick.
    The LLM-AI output, says that an inability to parse the optical
    drive output, could stop all output entirely, but that seems
    far-fetched as a root cause. There's no evidence that the
    slop that pours out of this stuff, can be stopped :-)

    So something about this, a dependency is missing, but what is it ?
    It doesn't smell of VDS here, in testing.

    I have a "Testing" profile. I get the same (non) results, there.

    I installed Win10 on a RAID mirror. I took care to use release 12 of the
    Intel driver files ("load driver" early in the install), and the OS when finished was running release 15 instead, so Windows paved over my attempt
    to control things. The RAID driver then was:

    IaStorAVC.sys 15.44.0.1015 884,752 bytes

    and the Get-Volume command ran normally.

    Get-Volume

    # calls...

    Get-CimInstance -ClassName MSFT_Volume -Namespace ROOT/Microsoft/Windows/Storage

    I didn't expect running RAID to necessarily change how "volumes" work,
    and there was no sign of your problem via investigating this way.

    Apparently Get-Volume is a script, rather than a compiled cmdlet.
    This makes some difference to the behavior on an error. This is supposed
    to print out the error, but it will be that ugly red text and unlikely
    to mean very much. I can't really test this, as I can't think of a way
    to reproduce your problem (not even my RAID experiment worked for this).
