A new document has appeared on Bitsavers: the “BeOS Developer’s Guide” <http://bitsavers.trailing-edge.com/pdf/be/>

This was the company founded by Jean-Louis Gasse after he left Apple. It
was designed as a more multimedia-oriented platform. I remember the
original BeBox hardware (dual PowerPC 603e processors) seemed lower-
specced than Apple PowerMac hardware, but the Be folks never tired of
pointing out that they had no backward-compatibility MacOS overhead to
worry about, so they could achieve much higher performance.

The Mac didn’t get dual processors until the PowerPC 604. The original BeBox’s single core clock speed was slightly behind the Mac (they pulled slightly ahead with the next model, for a few months), but the folks at Be
did a great job (both technically, and in their marketing) of pushing the importance of multiprocessor setups. Their “multiple live videos on the
face of a rotating cube” demo was *very* impressive.

I recently found my Be docs and CDs in a long-packed box. The hardware got
lost in a move, sadly. I’m still grumpy about it. :-)
