Star Trek director Joseph Pevney, the son of a New York watchmaker,
began his career in entertainment as a vaudeville boy soprano in the
1920s. He began studying medicine at NYU, but soon abandoned that in
favor of his ambitions in the entertainment industry.
He directed several episodes that are widely regarded as being among
the best of The Original Series, including The City on the Edge of
Forever, Amok Time, Journey to Babel and The Trouble with Tribbles. He
is tied with Marc Daniels for the most Original Series episodes
directed (if we count Daniels' The Menagerie, Part I and The
Menagerie, Part II as a single production).
His efforts won him three Hugo Award nominations, all in 1968, one of
which he deservedly won for The City on the Edge of Forever, shared
with writer Harlan Ellison.
Pevney retired in the 1980s, having directed over 35 films and
hundreds of television episodes.
Mr. Pevney was at the directorial helm for:
* Arena
* The Return of the Archons
* A Taste of Armageddon
* The Devil in the Dark
* The City on the Edge of Forever
* Catspaw
* Friday's Child
* Amok Time
* Wolf in the Fold
* The Apple
* The Deadly Years
* The Trouble with Tribbles
* Journey to Babel
* The Immunity
