Hi everyone,
I am very pleased to announce the following:
Zeus BBS 1.8 Released - Adding Native Telnet Support
October 2026 -- The Zeus BBS project today announced the release
of Zeus 1.8, an update to the Amiga bulletin board system software.
The headline feature is a complete, native Telnet implementation, alongside
a major rework of the filebase engine and a round of security hardening.
Also included for the first time is an Amiga Community Trial key, unlocking
all features immediately after installation.
Native Telnet, with TLS
------------------------
Zeus 1.8 introduces TelnetConnector and TelnetListener, giving Zeus direct Telnet support for the first time, with no external Telnet-to-serial
gateway required. TelnetListener answers incoming Telnet connections on a configured TCP port and hands them off to a line; TelnetConnector serves
that line exactly as the existing serial Connector does, so callers see no difference in how the BBS behaves. Both support telnets -- secure Telnet
over TLS -- using the optional AmiSSL v5 integration, with self-signed certificate generation built into the Lines preferences editor.
Supporting utilities were updated to work over a Telnet connection as well
as a real serial line alongside related performance enhancements.
Filebase engine, reworked
--------------------------
The filebase backend (fbzeus.library) received a significant performance
and reliability pass. Accumulations of files - along with their changes, updates, uploads, downloads and everything that's happenened over the
decades that a Zeus BBS has been running - exposed a number of performance issues in the filebase engine. These are fixed, along with significant
reworks of the FileRebuild and FileEditor tools for ease of use and reliability.
Also in this release
---------------------
o ZPOP3Xfer has been substantially revived, including POP3S (POP3 over
SSL/TLS) support via AmiSSL v5, a Ctrl-C abort handler, and support for
alternative configurations via a CONFIG argument.
o A round of security review fixed buffer overflow risks across
zeus.library, zmf.library, Zeus core, BBSLine, ZMailer and ZMP.
o ZMP gained a CONFIGTEST mode that validates a mailer configuration
without running any tasks.
o SysOpReport is a new tool that gives sysops a single at-a-glance
summary of things needing attention: users and files pending
validation, message areas that look unconfigured, and TLS certificates
approaching expiry -- with an option to renew those certificates
automatically. RenewLineCertificates makes certificate renewal
scriptable from the command line.
A full list of changes is included in History.doc in the release archive.
Availability
------------
Zeus 1.8 is a full install archive containing the complete Zeus
program and utilities. It includes a Community Trial key file for anyone
to test the system in full. The archive can be used for a fresh install or
to upgrade an existing Zeus 1.5 or newer installation.
