That is because the penguin routine randomizes the direction for each penguin.
Note that in this particular post there are 2 facing right and 2 facing left.

I knew I was skirting the edge with 16, especially when they get quoted back. So far all the terminals here have no issue with 16 as far as displaying the originals are concerned. I am betting the 4 below you shouldn't have problems with. Same with 8 or even 12. 16 is a tad too close to call but they are legitmate and just fit into an 80 character line. The bash script calls 'nproc' to determine the correct amount of penguins to display.

Held horizontally I see 14 lines , 81 characters long
The rest of the screen is blank (just like Ed's Head (C) TM).

I've logged into BBBS systems that might be comparable. However I used a text browser, usually lynx, on a PC to read/write.
That should work, except your browser might be using up precious characters by adding spaces to the start of lines (margins).

No. It only prints the number of processors.

That was ages ago and as shown below there are now a dozen of them, half of which are in the pairing position. So far nothing has come of it. I am guessing ascii penguins are sterile or perhaps they haven't figured out how do 'it'. Have yet to see any ascii eggs laid nevermind hatch. Obviously privacy hasn't worked.

That's about as simple as I can make them. However it changes nothing and w totally screw up the 16 penguin matrix length-wise for quoting, and nobody wants that.
