NATIONAL NEWS FOR WEEK COMMENCING JUNE 8 2025
IN OUR 30th YEAR OF NON STOP NEWS

    THIS WEEK:-
Just for something different I'm Jason vk2law stepping in for Graham
    hosting the news,

I am hoping we will have lots and lots AND lots lot more
IN THIS EDITION OF NEWS FROM THE WIRELESS INSTITUTE OF AUSTRALIA.

BUT WAIT - THERE'S MUCH MUCH MORE IN THIS EDITION OF NEWS FROM THE
    WIRELESS INSTITUTE OF AUSTRALIA.

    I'M EDITOR GRAHAM VK4BB

    AUSTRALIANA
ACMA consults on remaking the CB class licence

ACMA are consulting on remaking the Radiocommunications (Citizen Band
Radio Stations) Class Licence 2015 (CB Class Licence), which is due to
    sunset on 1 October 2025.

Their view is that the CB class licence is operating effectively and
propose to remake it with minor changes.

ACMA are also seeking views on the use of the 3 emergency call channels
(HF CH 9, and UHF CHs 5 and 35) and the 2 data transmission channels used
for telemetry and telecommand (UHF CHs 22 and 23).

You can find full details on the ACMA website
NOW just before I continue lets check the time
    Have you got a second?

Well, it only takes a second - actually, a few minutes for this
weird n wonderful story, which introduces an important new atomic
clock that's been put to work at the official US headquarters of
    timekeeping in Colorado.

Keep your eye on the clock, especially if you've been recording your
QSOs like the rest of us, in Coordinated Universal Time. this new
atomic clock at the National Institute of Standards and Technology
has been operating since April at NIST's Boulder, Colorado offices.
It will soon have a bigger job as part of a group of timekeepers
around the world that assists with the calibration of UTC.

Known as NIST-F4, the clock is still awaiting certification by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures before that can happen.

Until then, its unprecedented precision is already hard at work
defining the official time over in the United States.

Its creators call it a "fountain" of precision because the cloud of
caesium atoms inside the clock oscillate at a rate of more than
9 billion times per second, rising and falling in the same way
water does in a fountain. Its resonant frequency is
    9 billion, 192 million, 631 thousand 770 hertz - to be precise.

That is the frequency that sets the standards for all other clocks.

If you want to see just how NIST-F4 works, see the link to a YouTube
video in the text version of this week's news, wia.org.au

Watching it will take only three minutes and three seconds of your
    time - more or less.

Every year, hams in the US and Canada observe the fourth full weekend
in June as Field Day, considered the most important amateur radio weekend
of the year. In Hawaii, however, amateur radio recognition will be going
on a little longer: the state's governor, Josh Green, has proclaimed all
of June to be Amateur Radio Month, in recognition of the 3400 hams
operating in the Pacific region. The state has ties to wireless that go
back more than 100 years, however. In 1914, its island of Oahu became home
to a Marconi wireless telegraphy station. In 1916, the first transmissions
were successfully sent to Japan from the US territory, marking the start
of wireless communication between the two nations.

ARRL Teachers Institute on Wireless Technology (TI) has 13 sessions
announced in 2025, with more in the works. The program, from ARRL is a donor-funded professional development program designed to help classroom teachers elevate their science, technology, engineering, and mathematics
    (STEM) programs using wireless technology.

This is all possible because of the high level of confidence that our
donors have in the program. We are grateful that many have stepped up to
make this all possible, said ARRL Director of Development Kevin Beal,
K8EAL. Through donations to the ARRL Education and Technology Program,
donors have entrusted ARRL to help teachers integrate amateur radio into
    their curriculum.

The support has been from all levels. During a YouTube telethon to benefit
the program, individual hams contributed more than $21,000, which unlocked another $20,000 challenge gift from donors. David Ginsburg, N3BKV, funded
an endowment in the name of his parents. The Hy and Mimi Ginsburg Educator position is the first of several major gifts to the program.

We are so excited that we get to grow the program this year, said ARRL Education and Learning Manager Steve Goodgame, K5ATA. Part of that growth
has involved making sessions available in local communities across the
country. After a successful first remote session was held on Staten
Island, another Louisiana, the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics
Lab is hosting one later in the year.

The success of the program is evident, but the lasting impact may go even further than we can measure today," said Goodgame. Network media outlets
have covered programs built by TI graduates, and there are hundreds of
active hams in the schools that TI graduates lead.

Recently in material science news from China we hear that Hailin Peng and
his team at Peking University just made the worlds fastest transistor
and its not made of silicon.

This new transistor from Hailin Peng and his team is a GAAFET.

Its made from bismuth oxyselenide (BiOSe) for the channel,
and bismuth selenite oxide (BiSeO) as the gate material
Runs 40% Faster and Uses 10% Less Power
    Next Generation DXing Programme

The ARRL has published an 8 part video series about the Next Generation
    of DXing.

The seminar was held April during the 76th International DX Convention.
A group of panellists with deep knowledge of the current state of the art
in the DXpedition world covered everything - from financing and planning
of a DXpedition to getting permits, arranging logistics, planning out equipment, managing both remote and local operators, dealing with problems
    and much more.

The latest technology being used in DXpeditions was explained in detail.

    NZ Straight Key Night

Next New Zealand Straight Key Night will be held Sunday 8 June
    from 9pm to 10pm NZDT (0800 to 0900 UTC) on 80 metres.

Polish and lubricate that old morse key and enjoy an evening of
    old-time radio fun.

Straight Key Night is an informal event which honours the roots of
amateur radio: Morse Code sent with a straight key (no bugs,
    sideswipers, keyers or keyboards).

    When.
Winter SKN is the second Sunday in June, 8-9pm NZ time.
Summer SKN is always the first Sunday in December, 9-10pm NZ time.

SKN honours the original amateur radio mode in an easy-going style.
Operators send signal report, name, location, type of key, type of
transmitter and power output. Stations are limited to 100W output
    power.

SKN is not a contest - but the operator who gets the most votes for
the quality of their sending will win the Bruce Scahill Best Fist
    Award.
This certificate honours Bruce ZL1BWG (SK), who was a dedicated
supporter of SKN. Please email your nomination to ZL1NZ within one
    week following the event.

    VHF UHF Field Days

    Winter 2025
Saturday 21 June through Sunday 22 June

This is Roger Harrison VK2ZRH, manager of the VHF-UHF Field Days.

The 2025 Winter event will proceed as advertised from 0100 UTC Saturday
21st June through 0059 UTC Sunday 22nd June, except in VK6 where it opens at 0300 on the Saturday and closes at 0259 on the Sunday.

Go to the VHF-UHF Field Days web page on the WIA website to download the new Rules.

Thats right! I said new Rules.

A couple of important things will be new with the Winter event.

Firstly, contesters will now be able to choose between two logging programs the one youve known for so long, VKCL and N1MM, widely used across many
    other contests.

Secondly, well be able to make use of the WIA online VK logchecker, as used with many other VK contests supported by the WIA.

Thirdly, there will be no Rover category. Raise a glass of your favourite beverage in honour of its passing. Responsible drinking is encouraged.

They are the main new things.

When youve downloaded the new Rules, go to your room not the shack; no distractions and read through the Rules carefully. At half the pace you read other things. Rinse and repeat. Twice. Put them aside for 24 hours. Rinse and repeat. Use a yellow text highlighter.

Take a copy with you on the Field Day weekend.

Check the VHF-UHF Field Days web page a few times between now and the happy event.

Remember Field Days are for getting outdoors and having fun!

This is Roger Harrison VK2ZRH for WIA National News.

Be on the lookout for some YLs ascending summits for a special SOTA event.
One year after organizing their inaugural Queens of the Mountains
activation, the YLs are back and they've gone global.

True to its name, the Queens of the Mountains event is a challenge worthy
of royalty. AND ITS ON NOW.

Paula K9IR and Amy AG7GP have brought the event back for its second year
as YLs activate SOTA summits on June 7th and June 8th - and not only YLs
around the world chase the activators; men are also invited to join in
this year's chase. Anyone contacting 5 or more YLs on a SOTA summit
    becomes eligible for a certificate.

The biggest honors will go to the YL activators themselves who will be
logging contacts and working toward any or all of six achievement awards, including one for a first-time SOTA activator. A special K1LIZ Memorial Achievement Award will be given to the YL with the highest number of achievement awards. Last year the event crowned Lorene W6LOR with the
honour, which bears the callsign of top-achieving activator Liz Burns
K1LIZ who became a Silent Key in February of 2022.

Never mind what prime-time TV has to offer - hams who have been missing
a chance to make contacts through HamTV will have something to celebrate
    soon.

HamTV was the Digital Amateur Television transmitter operating on the
Columbus module of the ISS until failure took it out of service in 2019.

Its repairs back here on earth were completed and the newly invigorated
HamTV was returned to the ISS via SpaceX CRS-30 in March of 2024.

ARISS reports that astronauts will complete its reinstallation in late
June in preparation for more contacts with schools around the world.
HamTV uses the DVB-S protocol in the 13 cm band to transmit digital video
    and audio in MPG2 format.

ARISS has high hopes that HamTV will become a long-running series --
without having to resort to re-runs

Starfish Space is preparing to launch its second mission, Otter Pup 2,
on SpaceXs upcoming Transporter-14 rideshare flight, where it will
attempt to dock with a D-Orbit ION satellite already aboard the same
launch. Unlike traditional spacecraft, Otter Pup 2 uses an electrostatic capture mechanism, allowing it to dock with unmodified satellites by
    attaching to flat panels.

The mission aims to demonstrate rendezvous and docking technologies that
will support future servicing missions, such as life extension and orbital debris inspection, for both commercial and government clients.

This mission will simulate the challenges of space servicing, with Otter
Pup 2 traveling long distances before performing proximity operations and multiple dockings. Starfish hopes to prove that its technology is
safe, flexible, and viable, building confidence in satellite servicing
amid growing demand and regulatory interest.

    Time Gentleman Time.

John VK4JJW had that weird and wonderful "clock" story at the start
of this weeks news.. now some more "timely" news.

The European Space Agency's ACES mission has launched the most precise
atomic clock ever sent to space, with the goal of improving how we measure elevation on Earth. This effort addresses real-world issues like the
infamous misalignment of a German-Swiss bridge caused by differing sea
    level baselines.

ACES was installed on the International Space Station's Columbus module
    on April 25, 2025

By linking ACES to the most accurate ground-based clocks, scientists can compare how time ticks across the planet-since time passes more slowly
in stronger gravity, this allows geodesists to map Earth's gravitational
field with centimeter-level precision. The clock network will eventually
make elevation measurements more accurate worldwide, including in poorly surveyed regions like Africa and South America. Though ACES is just a
first step, it paves the way for a future system of even more precise space-based clocks that could revolutionize infrastructure planning,
sea level monitoring, and geophysical research.

On-Loan DMR Kit Starts Young UK Hams On Their Journeys

When youre first starting out in amateur radio, you cant borrow
confidence in getting on the air but now in the UK you can borrow
something thats almost just as helpful. A new program created especially
to help hams under the age of 18 who are just starting their radio
    journeys.

The DMR project launched recently by the Radio Society of Great Britain
is a way to provide opportunity - and radio equipment - for new young
amateurs to become accustomed to making QSOs on a regular basis. The
Outreach Teams new DMR kit contains DMR handheld transceivers and
hotspots to borrow for as long as three months at no cost.

Accompanying the equipment, of course, is the opportunity to use it - and
the RSGBs team will also be hosting regularly scheduled youth nets to
give as many participants as possible a good start. Licensed hams or
school groups with at least one licensee are eligible to apply to use the
    kits.

Meanwhile, the society is also encouraging teachers to establish school
clubs and to become amateurs themselves. Funding from the Radio
Communications Foundation will cover the cost of up to nine teachers
    exams.

DXLook.com -- A New Real-Time HF Propagation Map Based Tool:

AK6FP has been experimenting with a new tool that visualizes HF
propagation in real time using live data from multiple networks --
WSPRnet, Reverse Beacon Network, PSK Reporter, and various DX Clusters.

The result is a site designed to give amateur radio operators a visual
feel for current band conditions. You can filter by band (10m-160m),
mode (Digital, CW, SSB), and perspective grid (your QTH), and it builds
a live propagation heatmap around that location.

Its built by AK6FP and is completely free to use no accounts,
no distractions. Just open it and explore.
