    Gidday - this is Peter - VK4EA - on behalf of the W I A board.

Post the A G M held a few weeks ago in Albury our constitution requires us
to select a President and Vice-President at the board meeting immediatelyfollowing the AGM.

I am happy to report that Scott - VK3KJ - has agreed to continue as
President and the board thought I can be Vice-President for another year.

The NZART (New Zealand Association Radio Transmitters) - the WIA
equivalent across the ditch - is celebrating their 100 anniversary this
year. The NZART Conference is being held in Auckland this weekend.

The board received an invitation from the NZART for the President to
attend - unfortunately - Scott is busy hence I shall be representing theWIA
    for this event.

As promised at the WIA AGM - the Affiliated Club Briefings will continue
this year. The next briefing is planned for the 14th of June. Keep an
eye on your email inbox for the invite and Angelo will join us in a tick with further on this important get together.

Cheers all - this has been VK4EA on behalf of the WIA board.

This is Angelo, VK2NWT, WIA Affiliated Clubs Coordinator.

Well, the next WIA Affiliated Clubs Webinar will be held in just two weeks
time on Sunday the 14th of June.

As usual, all WIA Affiliated club Presidents are invited to join in the presentation which will be hosted by WIA President, Scott Williams along with other Board Members and presenters to discuss just some of the many items
that the WIA is working on for the benefit of all amateur radio operators in Australia.

As in the past, all Clubs Presidents are encouraged to submit any topics they may wish to raise for discussion. Topic submissions should be sent to me as soon as possible using the following email address: clubs@nationaloffice.wia.org.au

The agenda for the Webinar will be sent out during the week leading up to the Webinar itself, as well as the link for registering online for the meeting.

Whilst the duration of the Webinar is generally around an hour or so, if time gets away from us the WIA will take your submission under advisement for discussion and perhaps included in future Webinars.

These meetings are proving to be very popular and are a constructive way for clubs to engage directly with the WIA Board, and I strongly encourage all
club Presidents out there to attend for the benefit of your respective club.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about the
Webinar itself or any other general Affiliated Club matters.

This has been Angelo VK2NWT for WIA National News.

This is a dejected Roger Harrison VK2ZRH, Editor-in-Chief of Amateur Radio magazine.

Im dejected because not everything went as it should have in the week before last.

They say that disasters happen in threes. Well, we got our three all in a
    row.

While the body of AR Issue 3 rolled off the press as I told you last week,
    from there disaster struck.

The printer said power cuts interrupted AR magazines production and,
apparently post-printing work had to be completed by hand. Another four or
five other magazines were also affected. However, this meant that the
magazine bundles would go only one day late to the mailing house and
    newsagent distributors.

So, the appropriate people were informed.

At this stage, the system seemed to have lost its presence of mind!

The bundles of AR for the mailing house were delivered to the newsagent distributor and those destined for the newsagent distributor were delivered
    to the mailing house!

This was quickly corrected, but the magazines may arrive at members addresses later than scheduled, while those for newsagents will be one week later than scheduled. However, the newsagent distributor pointed out that this meant
that AR issue two would be on-sale for an extra week!

Nevertheless, disruptions notwithstanding, AR Issue 3 is ON ITS WAY.

Theres much to look forward to in Issue 3.

Amateur Radio magazine. More guts. Less gab. Trusted by hams across Australia since 1933. Proudly produced and printed in Australia, by amateurs for amateurs. Also available online.

Thats it for now. Bye-bye from a less-dejected Roger Harrison VK2ZRH. AUSTRALIANA

Sydney drone shows cancelled for now after malfunction saw 89 drones fall
    into the harbour.

The drone show's operator says a change in radio frequency caused 89 drones
to fall into the harbour around Cockle Bay.

The incident occurred not long into the "star-bound" show when almost 90
drones began falling out of formation and into the harbour.

Operator SkyMagic said the 89 drones landed in the water after an "unforeseen change in the radio frequency environment, which compromised positional accuracy and triggered emergency landings."

"This anomaly caused a number of drones in the fleet to enact failsafe
landing procedures in response to compromised positional accuracy," their statement read.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has opened an investigation.

Destination NSW CEO Karen Jones confirmed there was no deliberate
interference, and praised the functioning of exclusion zones.

It has recently come to the IRTS (Irish Radio Transmitters Society) that information contained in IRTS membership records has been exported by
an individual member of the society to independently create a bespoke
dataset containing personal data of IRTS members.

This is referred to as the 'Unauthorised Dataset'.

The use of IRTS membership records for this purpose, and the creation of the Unauthorised Dataset, was not authorised by the IRTS committee and does not comply with our GDPR policy. The committee has reported the

incident to the Data Protection Commission.

IRTS are currently obtaining legal advice in respect of their legal
obligations and responsibilities towards its members.

Also they are working to secure and destroy that Unauthorised Dataset, implement a full review of access rights of appropriate people who have
access to the IRTS Membership Records and design a full retraining programme
in respect of collecting, processing, and securing IRTSPersonal Data.

The committee is disappointed by the incident, which occurred despite
their ongoing commitment to data security and will provide an update to
members when more information becomes available.

IRTS also askes "If you have any information relating to the incident, please contact the society.

    JARL 100TH ANNIVERSARY

On 12 June 2026, the Japan Amateur Radio League (JARL) will mark the
    100th anniversary of its founding.

Then, in September 2027, amateur radio itself in Japan will celebrate its
    own centennial milestone.

To honour this historic moment and to open the door to the next 100
years, the JARL has designated the period from 1 June 2026 through 30 September 2027 as its Centennial Celebration Period, during which a wide
range of commemorative activities will be carried out:

An exhibition, 'Echoes From The Rock' Marks 80 Years Of Ham Radio And
    Gibraltar Amateur Radio Society Anniversary

The exhibition opened Wednesday, 27th May, at the John MacKintosh Hall. All members of the public, tech enthusiasts, and history buffs are warmly invited to attend and discover the fascinating world of wireless communication.

Special Callsign ZB2FTY, is on air during the week from a shack setup at the exhibition and the club.

Later this year (dates yet to be advised) the relevant local authorities are
to issue a commemorative 50p coin and a set of stamps to mark the 50th anniversary of the GARS and the 80th anniversary of the first amateur radio transmission from Gibraltar.

    WORTH THE FLIGHT.

The RSGB team had a very successful time at the Dayton Hamvention, they
spoke to hundreds of attendees, signed up a lot of new members, and were delighted by the very positive response to the RSGB app. Many radio amateurs hadnt realised that as an RSGB member they can read RadCom Basics, RadCom
Plus and 25 years of back issues of RadCom all in one place and were keen to sign up to membership as a result.

Two AGM trophies were also presented in person by RSGB President Bob Beebe, GU4YOX and RSGB Board Chair Stewart Bryant, G3YSX.

WIA Director and immediate Past Vice President VK3GK Lee Moyle was also in attendance at Dayton.

More than 60 companies participated in an exercise, along with allied
partners from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.

US Space Command has launched a new series of classified wargames called
Apollo Insight, bringing together military experts and commercial space companies to examine potential threats in orbit.

The first tabletop exercise focused on a simulated scenario involving a
nuclear payload in low Earth orbit and its potential consequences for space operations. Officials said a nuclear detonation in orbit could destroy or disable thousands of satellites and disrupt communications, navigation, and surveillance systems worldwide. Previous government assessments suggested portions of low Earth orbit could become unusable for up to a year following such an event.

Space Command plans additional Apollo Insight exercises later this year
focused on orbital manoeuvre warfare and other evolving space threats

The TinyDX is a miniature FT8/4 QRP ~1W transceiver designed to be powered
and operated via a USB connection to a smartphone/tablet running an FT8 app such as FT8TW for android or IFTX for IOS.

It is able to operate on any 2 of the HF high bands, 20M, 17M 15M, 12M, 10M which are defined by the builder during the software configuration process.
The TinyDx does not have CAT control but uses the transmit audio signal to switch the PA and receiver during the transmit/receive cycle. Band and mode
are selected via 2 hardware switches on the main board.

Designer Barb Asuroglu WB2CBA has shared the design on GitHub with all of the necessary fabrication files for the boards to be built and populated by the
PCB manufacturer JLCPCB then just connect the pre-built boards together and load the bootloader and firmware as per the instructions on Barbs blog.

Bird Chaser Bingo Summer 2026 Adds New Twist to Satellite Operating

A new adventure/community challenge called Bird Chaser Bingo Summer 2026 is inviting amateur radio satellite operators to add a playful twist to their on-air activities.

Organized by Sean Borgerson, KK7OVF, the event is now underway and invites operators to participate through until August 31 2026.

Operators can participate from anywhere and compete by completing satellite-themed bingo objectives based on contacts, locations, satellites,
    and operating challenges.

Bird Chaser Bingo draws inspiration from other light-hearted amateur radio satellite activities such as WM-PLOTA (Walmart Parking Lots on the Air) and
AD Squared. Organizers describe it as a friendly competition intended to encourage operating activity and create opportunities for satellite operators to connect while pursuing unusual goals. There are no entry fees, sponsors,
or geographic limitations, and participation is open to satellite operators worldwide.

Players receive a bingo card filled with summer-themed operating tasks and satellite-related objectives. Participants can earn a traditional bingo by completing a row, column, or diagonal. Those seeking an additional challenge can attempt a Full Eclipse, the events term for completing every square on
    the card.

    Launching Satellites With Zero Emissions

Most rockets burn thousands of litres of fuel before they even clear the
launch pad. SpinLaunch aims to skip that phase. Using a vacuum sealed centrifuge at Spaceport America, the California based company spins payloads
to 8,000 kilometres per hour before releasing them skyward. A small rocket motor handles only the final orbital insertion, bypassing the most fuel intensive part of the journey.

SpinLaunch has completed ten successful suborbital tests, carrying hardware
for NASA, Airbus, and Cornell University. While the flights themselves are
less intense, the companys lab qualification in Long Beach proved that satellite components could survive 10,000 G of centrifugal force, the exact environment required for a kinetic launch. NASAs data confirmed the system is compatible with standard satellite hardware, clearing the first major hurdle for the technology.

The transition from suborbital prototypes to a full orbital accelerator
remains the projects greatest challenge. At orbital speeds, atmospheric drag becomes a violent engineering obstacle. While suborbital tests validated the physics at a smaller scale, the orbital class centrifuge remains in an exploratory phase as of May 2026. The question isnt whether the centrifuge
can spin; its whether a vehicle can survive the transition from a vacuum chamber to the thick atmosphere at hypersonic speeds.

    tinyurl.com/3m6hukp6
    (ans137)
On December 28, 1964, a Thor-Able-Star rocket lifted off from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California and put a small US Navy satellite into a low polar orbit.

The satellite was called Transit 5B-5.

It weighed about 70 kilograms. It was part of the first satellite-based navigation system in human history -- the predecessor to GPS, designed to
help American submarines fix their position anywhere in the world. It was
given a working lifetime of a few years. Maybe five, if everything went well. That was sixty-one years ago.

Transit 5B-5 is still up there. Its still in orbit. It's still transmitting. And somewhere right now, an amateur radio operator with a backyard antenna is listening to a signal on 136.658 MHz that was first beamed down from space
when Lyndon B. Johnson was president.

If you tune the right radio receiver to the right frequency at the right
time, you might hear her pass overhead.

The signal, consisting of a musical tone coupled with a rhythmic, ticking Pulse-Code Modulation data stream, is actively tracked by ham radio operators and Software-Defined Radio enthusiasts today.

    SCHOOLS IN.

Now here is a class I wouldn't mind attending.

Chisum High Schools Gifted and Talented (GT) Program welcomed two
distinguished alumni to their Texas Campus, Keith Cullum and Matt Patterson, for an engaging presentation on the world of amateur radio.

Keith and Matt shared their personal journeys into ham radio, explaining how they were first introduced to the hobby and how it developed into a lasting passion for amateur radio communication and Morse code. Their presentation
gave students insight into both the technical and historical aspects of the field, as well as the opportunities it can create for lifelong learning and connection.

A highlight of the visit came when Keith successfully established a live
radio contact with a transmitter located across in Florida, offering students
a real-time demonstration of amateur radio capabilities in action.

Both speakers are graduates of Chisum High School and reflected on their
early experiences in their World History class in 1995. While students there, they participated in a memorable contact with the Space Shuttle through the Shuttle Amateur Radio Experiment (SAREX), an experience they credit with helping spark their continued interest in amateur radio.

Chisum GT students were also provided the opportunity to meet with Cullum and Patterson and learn firsthand about the evolution and real-world applications of amateur radio communication.

WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS - RADIO SCOUTING

A group of Girl Guides are preparing for a different kind of adventure - getting licensed - with the help of a ham radio club in their Caribbean
    nation.

When the summer holidays arrive in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, many
members of the Girl Guides in Georgetown will change from classroom students
to amateur radio students. The Youlou Amateur Radio Association has a
training session planned, enabling Girl Guides and other students to prepare
to take their ham radio licence exam.

For many of the Girl Guides, this will be their second encounter with amateur radio. In early May, 32 Girl Guides got their introduction to radio science
and the radio experience with the help of association president James Codrington J88JC and past president Don De Riggs J88CD. The girls learned how two-way radios work and participated in a simulated disaster drill using hand-held radios within the school compound.

The radio session in Georgetown was the latest the ham association has conducted for Girl Guides. Education is a big part of the mission behind the Youlou amateur group, which also provides vital services in emergency communication.

In the USA, Senator Ted Cruz, in a strong pre-Memorial Day message,
publicly highlighted the critical role that Amateur Radio Service volunteers play during disasters, praising and thanking ham radio operators who provide essential communications when storms and emergencies knock out power and cellular networks and communities are cut off.

Sen. Cruz observed that in these emergencies it is ham radio operators who
step forward, bringing with them the tools, expertise, and the commitment to reconnect people when it matters most. He noted this dedication was clearly demonstrated recently in the horrific Camp Mystic floods.

He emphasized that as the US prepares for yet another summer storm season,
ham radios role remains just as vital as ever.

WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS - VIDEO

A newly released video from the YouTube channel Heriton revisits the unusual history of AMSAT OSCAR 7 (AO-7), the amateur radio satellite launched in 1974 that unexpectedly returned to operation after more than two decades of
    silence.

The video recounts how AO-7 ceased transmitting in 1981 after a battery
failure led operators to declare the spacecraft inactive. In June 2002,
amateur radio operators discovered that AO-7 had resumed operation while in sunlight, likely because long-term changes inside the failed battery pack removed the electrical short that had disabled it. AO-7 remains one of
amateur radios most enduring engineering stories and is still active today.

Heriton combines historical footage, narration, and technical background to introduce the satellites story to a broader audience.
