August Presentation Night - WIA Q&A with VK4EA=20
=20
Our August presentation night will see a casual information and=20
question & answer session with WIA Director, Peter Schrader VK4EA.=20
=20
Are you a WIA member or have considered becoming a WIA member and=20
wanted to ask questions of someone in the know to clarify those=20
last points?=20
=20
This is the evening for you!=20
=20
Peter has agreed to take us through and outline the WIA - structure,=20 current directors, governance, involvement with the IARU and ITU.=20
=20
Also outline the services that the WIA provides to members and=20
affiliated clubs including Public Liability Insurance - attendance at=20
the World Radio Conferences, AR Magazine and much more.=20
=20
Peter will also run through current consultations with ACMA including=20
the move to the Class Licence, Assessments changes (August Consult=20
Paper), Repeaters RALI, and more.=20
=20
We will be opening it up for questions, comments, etc=20
=20
We will be going out on RF and Streaming on the REAST YouTube=20

This is Roger Harrison VK2ZRH, Editor in Chief of Amateur Radio=20 magazine.=20
=20
Heres the juice, freshly squeezed.=20
=20
Last Monday, the files for Issue Number 4 of AR magazine were=20
uploaded to the printer's server in Bairnsdale, Victoria. Look out=20
for it landing in your letterbox, your Post Office Box, or your local=20 newsagency from about Thursday next week.=20
=20
The theme for the issue is Promoting your club and ham radio.=20
=20
BUT before I go there. You may be aware of the news about what the=20
ACMA is up to. Or, going to be up to.=20
=20
So? The ACMA is to do what?=20
=20
Its taking back exams and call signs. You heard me. Theyre going=20
back to the future. Accredited Assessors across the nation have all=20
been appraised of the general details by the ACMA. In our Regulatory=20 Update notice the return to formality here WIA Past President,=20
Phil Wait VK2ASD, details where this has all come from, what has just=20 happened . . and . . you can read what he has to say about the=20
future. Accompanying that, WIA Statistician Marc Hillman VK3OHM=20
spells out Assessments, a fact check. That will put to bed some=20 speculation. Another must read.=20
=20
Moving on . .=20
=20
The OTHER news is that, from this issue, we launch a new column for=20
young people 25 years of age and below. Alec Cherry VK2APC heard=20
on these broadcasts regularly has been recruited to submit articles=20
for each issue of the magazine. The objective is to have a young=20
persons voice in the magazine.=20
=20
Back to this issues theme of promotion.=20
=20
The hobby is dying . . said Handiham . . before the year is out . .=20
Lets not go there. That bit of verse was back in Issue 2. Theres a=20
big role for ham radio clubs to play here. So, what to do? That is=20
the question. Well, putting yourself out there can be easier than=20
first appears, given a few tips on how to do it and how its done.=20
Arch promoter Richard Murnane VK2SKY says we keep ham radio a bit a=20 secret. Richard has a trove of tips and techniques to share.=20
=20
On top of that, we have a couple of what are called in the trade=20
case studies.=20
=20
The Ballarat Amateur Radio Group says getting attention in the local=20
media is there for the taking so, grab it! Club President,=20
Ben Daniel VK3NRD, lays out how they did it. And for those who think=20
that promoting ham radio at a museum might send the wrong message=20
think again. Carmel Morris VK2CAR details the story of how a heritage=20 naval destroyer cleaves the waves again radio waves, that is. The=20
HMAS Vampire the last of the Royal Australian Navys big gun=20
ships moored dockside at the Australian National Maritime Museum in=20
Sydney is back on the air under the call sign VK2VMP.=20
=20
Lou Destefano VK3AQZ is back . . with a new project. He kicks off a=20 multi-part technical feature on a homebrew three-band 100 W HF=20 transceiver. His rig for the road.=20

REGION ONE=20
=20
IARU Monitoring service in Region One has reported on interference=20 received several times from the Australian Over The Horizon Radar=20
'JORN' on the 30 m band.=20
=20
RADAR activity was, unfortunately, about the same as on the last=20
months with countless reports about them in all bands from=20
40 to 10m. The most disturbing, because of their large bandwidth as=20
well as for the huge power used in their transmissions, which are,=20
most of the times, long-lasting, were the ones sent by the RUSSIAN=20
Over the Horizon radar, Contayner heard on 40, 30, 02 17 15 and 12m=20 sometimes with several simultaneous transmissions on the same band.=20
=20
This was followed by the ones by the British OTHR located at the=20
UK Sovereign Base Area in Cyprus observed on 17, 15 and 10m.=20
=20
Scottish adventurer Cam Cameron is home safe.=20
=20
You may recall that he was joined initially - and briefly - by 2=20
amateur radio operators on Rockall in the North Atlantic during his=20 attempt to break the 45-day record for a stay there, set in 2014.=20
His other goal was to raise money for charity.=20
=20
Cam's challenge came to an end after 32 days, after he was=20
successfully rescued by coast guard and search-and-rescue=20
personnel. He wrote on the expedition website that he was=20
[quote]=20
"in pain, exhausted and hypothermic." However, he did meet his=20
other goal and was grateful to have helped a number of charitable=20 causes.=20

=20
REGION TWO=20
=20
The Federal Communications Commission has released its latest=20
quarterly count of broadcast licenses.=20
=20
As of the end of June 2023, there were 4,464 licensed AM stations.=20
That total was down 270 from June of 2013, according to Radio World=20 calculations based on FCC figures. It continues a trend of gradual=20
but consistent erosion in the AM numbers of the USA.=20
=20
The number of FM commercial stations is up 69 from 10 years ago.=20
=20
=20
REGION THREE=20
=20
The Japan Amateur Radio League (JARL) has announced the return of=20
JARL Ham Fair for 2023, this being the 45th event and expects to=20
attract 30,000 visitors.=20
=20
The ham fair will take place August 19th and 20th.=20
=20
JARL HAM Fair is held to promote healthy development of amateur radio=20
and improvement of technology. There are exhibitions and events for=20 introducing amateur radio to the general public, and the exchange of=20 information and establishing friendship between amateurs.=20 -------------------------------------------------------------------*=20

ARRL holds five sessions each year, and each session is 5 days in=20
length. The Teachers Institute is an expenses-paid professional=20 development program filled with lectures, hands-on activities, and=20 demonstrations that are intended to provide teachers with tools and=20 strategies to introduce basic electronics, radio science, satellite=20 communications, amateur radio, weather science, micro-controllers,=20
and electronic sensors to we younger students.=20
=20
"The whole idea is to inspire teachers to go back and inspire their=20 students to be excited about amateur radio," said K5ATA.=20

Hams Honour Retired Search and Rescue Planes=20
=20
Four aircraft used by Canadas Air Force for S&R work were retired during =
pandemic without much fanfare. Those four planes are now getting their=20 retirement party thanks to amateurs who love aviation as much as they lov=e=20
ham radio. Using the antennas on board the planes (which will be grounded=as=20
museum pieces now in four provinces) they will be calling QRZ on July 22n=d=20
UTC and will be open to attract visitors from the region and they will ev=en=20
attempt a 2m net between all four planes. This event is called Buffalo's =on=20
the Air, so named for the RCAFs CC115 Buffalo aircraft. It was organised==20
mainly by aircraft technician Phil Tanner VA7XOZ, who worked on the plane=s.=20
=20on=20
=20
This is a way to mark history, to educate the public about the S&R functi=
of the planes and, of course, to show people what amateur radio can do. T=he=20
antennas on the planes are indeed capable of using HF frequencies reserve=d=20
for amateurs because the planes in their S&R functions often had to make==20
contact on the civilian frequencies.=20=20

WIA News rebroadcasters often give Short Wave Listeners a=20
welcome to the broadcast as they commence call-backs=20
straight after the Local News. Local news follows National=20
news in all states. It would be great if those SWL's would=20
email their reception reports and location to=20

=20
If you would like to submit news items for possible inclusion=20
in the VK1WIA broadcasts, please email your item in text to=20 nation...@wia.org.au and don't JUST send url's links or=20
posters, but take the time to pen YOUR contribution.=20
=20
To submit audio, email nation...@wia.org.au=20
and send BOTH the audio and the text=20
=20
We would appreciate items certainly no longer than 1.5 mts in=20
length as we only have a half hour.=20
=20
Remember the sooner you submit material the more the=20
likelihood of it being broadcast in the very next edition of=20
WIA National News.=20
=20
Each recorded item will only be broadcast once, if you want a couple=20
of mentions, please submit different slants to keep your=20
event 'fresh' and always if the news room is to read your=20
item --- write it in the 3rd person. (First if YOU are=20
reading your own item). If you are mentioning your own name / call=20
in the story, say something like "and myself, Pat, vk11abc"=20
