• AF1 spotted...

    Hi All,

    ... from my balcony:

Pure chance! I had no idea it was goning to pass by. I'd just arrived home with groceries and was opening the balcony door when I spotted what looked like a 747.

I thought, 'I'll just grab a quick photo, maybe it's it'. And it was, as I confirmed later by comparing the livery to images online.

    Bye, Wilfred.

That is definately one of the SAM aircraft. It is only AF1 if the President is aboard.

Nice picture, and the 747 is definately one of the best looking aircraft in the sky.

The potus arrived in my country in that aircraft. So he probably was too when it left! ;-)

I didn't hear about 2 AF[12]'s. But if it's always traveling in pairs, it could have been...

I seem to remember that they use similar if not same systems that used by
ElAl for their fleet - anti missiles both radiation & heat & possibly others.

Not really ... they are identical twins except for the tail number, 28000 and 29000. The otherone not carrying the President flies to an airport or military field in the vicinity and remains on stand-by with the same capabilities and catering in case the primary aircraft malfunctions. Then it is ferried.

So it's not really a decoy.

AF1 also uses military corridors and shies away from standard transponders, most of the time you cannot track it except when it enters civilian airways, for separation purposes. The decoys that indeed fly along most of the trip are large military cargo planes, usually the Boeing C17 Globemaster which will fly in front of AF1 until just before landing and then veeres away.
