• 48th anniversary of the BBS

From Dimitri Papadopoulos@1:229/134 to All on Mon Feb 16 21:19:46 2026
Today marks BBS day, the anniversary of a milestone in online communication history. On February 16 1978 the first public dial-up bulletin board system, CBBS (Computerized Bulletin Board System), went live in Chicago. CBBS was created by Ward Christensen and Randy Suess so that hobbyists could exchange messages and files using modems long before the internet was widely available. CBBS inspired tens of thousands of other BBSes and laid the foundation for digital forums, message networks like FidoNet, and many aspects of today's online communities.

Happy BBS day to everyone still keeping the old school spirit alive!
