Yep, I am just working on some depenencies for the desktop. I'm going
to have a go at getting xorg and friends installed tonight. If I
succeed I'll be building an xfce desktop tomorrow.

I just updated the kernel to 6.1.9 earlier today and I see
penguins here on my bios boot machine.

No love here yet but closing in on it. I currently have two legacy
machines I can try it out on. I figure by the weekend I *should* have a
working legacy boot but no promises on boot penguins as both are i915. I
may switch one to a uefi later.

I don't see the penguins until the screen goes blank (kernel
modesetting I think) and then they show up after that. I never saw
them until I added the nouveau module.

I have the boot logo selected in ..
make menuconfig -> Device Drivers -> Graphics support
It's right at the bottom.

I have penguins now.

I was just looking at the golded source and there is an ebuild in the contrib directory. Have you ever tried that? It may be old, I'm not sure.

I recently redid my partition scheme here and I added a space for gentoo on it. There is no file system on it yet but when I get some stuff out of the way I plan to do that and have a fresh look at gentoo.

One thing I noticed when I ran make oldconfig is that the nfs v4 server is enabled by default now. I was thinking of enabling that for a look but so far I have stuck with v3. Look like v4 is on now.

I couldn't resist. On the plus side, everything is still working including the patched grub, although I am seriously thinking of switching back to the git grub just so I'm ready when it finally gets updated. I am guessing a new version isn't too far away.

My neighbour "He who is Paul" says that he was enabling all versions when he last used nfs. Like me he now uses sshfs instead since it is far less complicated to set up and use. I never used nfs that much way back when and quit looking at it back in the late 1990's.

nfs is still working as expected here. I haven't told either side to use v3 or v4 but they connect fine. There is no mention in the logs what version they use but it's happy whatever it is.
