  • The (English) Beat & Adam Ant

    Fantastic concert in Dallas last Tuesday.

    Opening up was The Beat (Called The English Beat in the US). Played a
    great selection of songs then on came Adam Ant. Now I know few songs
    but not as many as I thought. I recognized Stand and Deliver, Ant Music
    (the opener), Prince Charming, and Puss in Boots. It's the only concert
    I've been to where I didn't know more than half the songs or the last
    encore song.

    That said, very entertaining. Top notch musicpersonship by both bands.

    Up next Belouis Some with The Alarm. Two more bands I don't really know
    much about but I enjoywhat I have heard.

    I've seen The English Beat twice, but both before Ranking Roger passed away. Haven't had the heart to listen to them again.

    They played at the Santa Cruz Beach boardwalk on a bandstand facing out over the ocean, with The Specials - it was a great Ska night.

    The first time, I saw the Beat with The Plimsouls, a little-known group with a couple of hits and exposure for the song "A Million Miles Away" from the movie "Valley Girl". I'd seen them back in 1984 and was amazed at the show they put on.

    Oh yeah, that Plimsouls album "Everywhere at Once" was in heavy rotation amoungst my college friends. "Oldest Story in the World" is another that I enjoy.

    Antonee does a great job filling in for Ranking Roger. Of course, he
    isn't Roger, but it's energetic and gets the crowd going. A great
    toaster and addition to the band. They sound great, and Dave does
    tribute members of the band who have passed before Can't get used to
    Losing You.

    That would have been a great gig. I was never huge into ska but the
    more I've listened over the last few years, I just realized its an
    amazing wall of sound that hits you, almost trance like if you just let
    the music flow over you.

    I've heard of The Plimsouls. In fact, they're performing as part of the
    Total Tubular tour which is currently going around, along with Thomas
    Dolby, Thompson Twin's Tom Baily, Modern English, Men Without Hats, The Romantics and Bow Wow Wow.

    Back to The English Beat, I'd highly recommend. Here's video from the
    front row at Norwich a couple of years back.
