The first five series of Red Dwarf were incredible. I'm not shocked to
learn that Yet Another Special has been cancelled, though. At this
point, it's probably for the best. Do we really want another silly
multiverse story to flog this franchise?

It's a shame the writers argued. I've heard that Craig Charles drew
strength, during his trial, from being told that Red Dwarf would go on
when he was free. It did, but s6 really wasn't the same show, and after
that it started spinning out (IMO).

It was never intended as serious SF. It's a sitcom in space, and a very

Beside Red Dwarf and Star Trek: Lower Decks, are there any other SF
sitcoms? Futurama, I guess. Krapopolis probably counts.

"Craig Charles" ..... "trial" ..... Say WHAT?? What for??

    AH!! I'm guessing this .....

    Quote
"In July 1994, Charles and another man were charged with rape and four
counts of indecent assault, following allegations by an associate and ex-girlfriend of Charles.[51] Charles was remanded in custody for three-and-a-half months before being granted bail, during which time he
was assaulted by a man wielding a makeshift knife.[51][52] In March
1995, Charles and his co-accused were acquitted of all charges at
trial.[51] *After being acquitted* , Charles spoke of the need to
restore anonymity for those accused of rape.[51][53] He stated: "The
fact that my name and address along with my picture can appear on the
front of the papers before the so-called 'victim' has even signed a
statement proves that anonymity for rape defendants is a must and that
    the law must be changed."[53]"
    End Quote

    Emphasis Mine.

Have we forgotten it? EXCELLENT. We should.

Yep, that's why there was a three-year hiatus between s5 and s6 -- Craig Charles was dealing with false felony charges. Unfortunately, Grant and
Naylor argued irreconcilably during that time, and so the show changed permanently.

Correction: Sci-fi dressed up as "humour".

I alwayd found Red Dwarf to be just idiotic and not even remotely funny.

"The Thundermans"?? Surely you meant "Thunderbirds"!!

Thunderbirds wasn't a "sit-com". It was sci-fi drama (using puppets and models). :-)

‘The Thundermans’ was an American children’s sitcom about a family of superheroes.

A short-lived series (only four episodes), but there was also a
follow-on movie "The Thundermans Return" and a new spin-off series "The Thundermans: Undercover" with 22 episodes so far.

Although I've never heard of "The Neighbors",

US sit-com about a gated community of extra-terrestrials living on Earth.

    "Metal Mickey",

‘Metal Mickey’ was an eighties British children’s sitcom about a robot.

The robot spoke a bit like the original Battlestar Galactica's cylons.
It has a great theme tune: <https://youtu.be/wYLMDlslaCg>

    "Solar Opposites",

American animated show about a family of aliens who move to a middle
    American town.

    "Hyperdrive",

A British sit-com about the crew of a spaceship that travel around
trying to convince alien governments to relocate their businesses to
Britain. Starring Nick Frost and Miranda Hart.

    "Rick and Morty",

‘Rick and Morty’ is a recent cartoon series about a mad scientist.

The series began in 2013 and there has been a recent movie too.

    "Small Wonder",

Eighties American children’s sitcom about an android disguised
    as a young girl.

    "Inside Job" or

American adult animated show where conspiracy theories are real.

    "We Are Not Alone",

British sit-com about aliens who conquer on Earth and make humans their
slaves, and a resistence movement trying to stop them. It's very silly,
but has a couple of recognisable actors like Amanda Abbington in it.

either .... so what would I know??

sitcoms? Futurama, I guess. Krapopolis probably counts.

Depends on how you define "sit-com" and "sci-fi" to some degree, but
    there has been:

    - My Favourite Martian
    - Quark
    - Mork & Mindy
    - ALF
    - Third Rock From the Sun
    - The Neighbors
    - Metal Mickey
    - Solar Opposites
    - The Thundermans
    - Hyperdrive
    - Rick and Morty
    - Small Wonder
    - Inside Job
    - We Are Not Alone

    to name a few. :-)

Oh yeah, I'd forgotten about some of those older ones (and never heard
of some others). Some, like Mork and Mindy, are only technically in the genre.

I'd think "Mork and Mindy" would fall smack dab in the middle of
    "sit-com" and "sci-fi".

It's a shame the writers argued. I've heard that Craig

I alwayd found Red Dwarf to be just idiotic and not even remotely funny.

I watched the first one. It wasn't great, but it also wasn't as flat-out
awful as I expected from its reputation. The new take on Lister could
have worked, maybe. He was different from the original, but an American imitating a scouse bloke would never have worked.

The original Red Dwarf was popular internationally but had trouble
catching on in the USA, IIRC. Maybe that should have told them
    something.

"The Thundermans"?? Surely you meant "Thunderbirds"!!

‘The Thundermans’ was an American children’s sitcom about a
    family of superheroes.

Although I've never heard of "The Neighbors", "Metal Mickey",

‘Metal Mickey’ was an eighties British children’s sitcom about
    a robot.

"Solar Opposites", "Hyperdrive", "Rick and Morty",

‘Rick and Morty’ is a recent cartoon series about a mad scientist.

    "Small Wonder",

Eighties American children’s sitcom about an android disguised
    as a young girl.

"Inside Job" or "We Are Not Alone", either .... so what would
    I know??

Gee Whiz, I've led such a deprived childhood!! Deprived/Depraved ...

No idea. I've never watched it (most "adult animations" are simply
crude garbage that I can't be bothered with). It's done by the same
people as awful "Rick and Morty".

I would guess that because they are from another planet, it is simply a
play on the phrase "polar opposites" since they find living on Earth
    different to their original planet.

    Solar Opposites
A family of aliens move to middle America after their planet

Our comedies have gotten away from that, actually. That's the stereotype
from the 90s and some of the Aughts, but comedies no longer focus around
    how "funny" some jerk is.

Even in the 80s, this was a problem. They weren't yet basing entire
series around what a jerk one guy was, but many passed off simple
insults as jokes, relying on the laugh track to make us think there'd
    been a witticism.

"The Goodies" was just comedy, so that would have been part

Hmmmm... for comedy, probably more like...

"The Goodies", "Monty Python" and "Fawlty Towers".

This actually could be a interesting discussion topic...

It is Scouse humour as scifi!

I think only one of the "Red Dwarf" characters had a Scouse
accent... Lister. (Craig Charles) So it's a bit harsh to say
the whole show was Scouse humour.

And what about the Ship's computer?

I don't think Holly (male or female version) was played by a
Scouser... or had a Scouse accent, but I didn't watch enough
of "Red Dwarf" to remember everything about it. The humour
generally was a bit OTT for my liking.

"The Survivors"?? Sounds "Sci-fi" but can't say I've
    ever heard of it.

IMDB lists three Series or, rather, two series and a
    mini-series called "The Survivors" ..... 1969-1970 (Lana
Turner, Ralph Bellamy, 1983 (Walter Matthau, Robin Williams)
and 2025 (Damien Garvey, Robyn Malcolm)

    No. It's none of those.

It's just "Survivors"... and it was created by Terry Nation
and aired on BBC1 in the mid-1970's.

The BBC did try and resurrect it but it wasn't successful. But,
Big Finish have continued the series on audio.

I'm guessing that should have been just "Survivors" (no "The"), which
    has been made twice.

The first time in 1975 by Terry Nation (Doctor Who's Dalek creator). <https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072572/>

Then again in 2008, starring Julie Graham (The Bletchley Circle,
    Shetland, etc.)
