• Watch Party: Colony in Space

From The True Melissa@3:633/10 to All on Sat Sep 13 07:20:37 2025
    From: thetruemelissa@gmail.com

For those who choose to participate, today's selection is Colony in
    Space, in series 8, starting with episode 15. It's a six-parter starring
    the Third Doctor.

The Doctor, now able to leave Earth briefly, travels with Jo to a space
colony which is being threatened by a monster. Wheels within wheels are revealed, and a sinister man in black clothes eventually turns up.

It's available on Tubi and directly from the BBC. If you don't have a
way to watch, coordinate with me and I'll stream it for you.

I watched this one on Blu-ray not that long ago... over three
evenings as it is too long (and dull) to be consumed in one
sitting. "Colony in Space", like a lot of the six parters,
works better being watched in instalments.

The Doctor, now able to leave Earth briefly, travels with Jo

Those scheming Time Lords send our dashing hero, complete with
frilly shirt and cape, off on a quest to locate the [missing]
files related to the "Doomsday Weapon"... (This story was
novelised as "Doctor Who and the Doomsday Weapon".) So the
TARDIS lands in a quarry and off we go on another adventure...

    Wheels within wheels are revealed,

A lot of running around, and a lot of famous faces from British
    television shows...

and a sinister man in black clothes eventually turns up.

Johnny Cash was in Doctor Who?

Oh no! The Master has stolen the Time Lords' files on the Doomsday
Weapon! This is such a calamity that they let the Doctor off his leash
to go fix it. They could do something themselves, but that would take
effort. This is probably the beginning of Time Lord decay -- the idea
    that they need the Doctor.

TV Tropes says this: Morgan was originally a woman, with Susan James
cast in the role. However, she was replaced by Tony Caunter when The
BBC's Head of Drama Serials made an unusual intervention and decided the
role was inappropriate for a woman to perform. Jameson was nevertheless
paid in full. Director Michael E. Briant though the decision was
    "unenlightened and sexist".

So is her name James or Jameson? At any rate, she's not seen in it.

A lot of filler was the norm back then.

An okay story. Although the Target novelization was better than the tv episodes.

"six parters" .... "watched in instalments" ... Well, back in
the day, (pre-VHS/Beta let alone CD/DVD or Direct Download),
how else were you supposed to watch it??

I think the point I was making went over your head.

    Clue: Subject title.

    Noted words!

Which could apply to a lot of the Target books... especially
those novels that had extra material [not in the broadcast
version of the story] in them.

For instance, the Colony in Space novelisation ("Doctor Who and
the Doomsday Weapon") by Malcolm Hulke, had Jo Grant meet the
Third Doctor for the first time in it... yet this happened on
    the TV three stories earlier!

Now the opposite is often the case... the one episode x 45/50
minute format is generally too short for the story, leading
to quick edits, rushed endings and portions of the plot missing!

Hence what many like the 25 minute format.

Technically, one episode of "Doctor Who" today is similar to
two x 25 minute episodes of the old days, but that's not enough
to tell a lot of the stories the likes of RTD, Moffat and
    Chibnall have been writing.

    IMO of course.

I think the point I was making went over your head.

No, far from it, you watched a six part (each 25 mins or so)
over three nights .... so, effectively, three 50 min episodes
..... and what do we get now-a-days??

    THAT is missing the point!

But if you were trying to make another point .....

    Clue: subject title.

    Clue: Subject title.

No, can't make the connection between 'Watch Party: Colony in
Space' and 'watching in instalments' ..... except that 'Watch
Party: Colony in Space' was made in installments!!

You do know what a "watch party" is, right?

Watch parties are usually one event at one time... with multiple
people all watching the same show at the same time, in different
places. So that would not [usually] mean sitting down at six
different times, like you would have done with broadcast TV in
the 1970s! Well... unless it was organised as six "watch
parties" at six different times that is! ;-)

So in plain English: Six episodes in one long viewing as opposed
to six episodes in six different viewings.

These are moderns times we are living in now yer know... you
need to get with it and try and be trendy with the hip kids of
    2025.

Now go and take that damn Smart TV out of its box and do
    something useful with your time!

    Supposed killed.

Well, if the Silurians had survived they'd have been very angry
reptiles and they would have been back looking for revenge.

Unless "make love not war" became their new motto of course...(!)

Still the Novel is better than the 7 episodes.

A lot of the Target books were 'better' than the televised
episodes... especially the stories that had a lot of padding on
television. (Which was never really an issue back then for us
children watching the episodes weekly... but it can be now if
trying to watch those stories in one go.) Better can be
subjective of course, but the Target authors that tried to
add some meat to often simple stories did generally
enhance the telling of the [same] story.

I can't remember too much about "Doctor Who and the Cave
Monsters" as it's been years since I read it and I don't
    own it anymore.
