Spamtrollers are trolls posting useless spam thinking it is content
but are posting useless noise. Spamtrolls are newsgroup vandals!
Thoses trolls are as bad as Donald Trump on Twitter.

Spamtroller Cujo , thou art rebuked in the Name of Yahweh the Father,
Lord Jesus Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit for Jesus has all authority here
and Satan has no authority here!

This is why CujoDeSockpuppet aka Kevin Fries is known on the poetry newsgroups as our Troll-in-Residence.

What's your next deflection, Miguel, you're going to pretend you don't live in the United States?

If so, in which country is your grammar error considered acceptable?

Ping: George J. Dance, that's the sentence in question. ^^^

If Miguel is an American, posting from, say New Jersey, thus above would be incorrect.

Basically it should be something like "when time permits," with the comma *inside* the quotation marks.

I just posted a fresh reply here to Miguel from his original post.

Basically, the correct form is something like "when time permits."

It took a week or two for anyone to respond, Miguel went very quiet on the thread, with Bruce and The Doctor basically burying the post with their flame trolling.

It appears that some are taking note, today.

If Miguel is an American, living in, say, New Jersey, he would probably be expected to use American English grammar rules.

If the quote is a complete sentence, the period is placed inside the closing quotation mark. For example:

Wrong again. The rule of British English is to treat commas and

Okay, you're right, for whatever reasons neither Pendragon or Dance has responded on the correct way to use a comma "inside quotation marks."

I suppose it isn't worth arguing about, anyhow, so we can just forget about it if you want to.

If GJD or Pendragon see this and want to comment, fine. Otherwise I say let's not continue wasting time going around and around over it.

If it happens again I'll probably mention it, but I have a feeling you won't be making that same mistake again, Miguel.

I suspect that it may be a time-waster, but since you name-checked me I'll venture
    one quick response.

First off, the he /Chicago Manual of Style/ agrees with you. Here's an example:
"In publications that follow Chicago style, commas and periods are placed before a closing quotation mark, ?like this,? rather than after, ?like this?. This convention has persisted even though it?s no longer universally followed outside the United States and isn?t entirely logical.
The other standard marks of sentence punctuation"semicolons, colons, question marks, exclamation points, and dashes"go after a closing quotation mark unless they belong to the quoted matter."

That's the rule in American English (whichh follows CMoS), and if you're a student at an American school, or writing for
an American publicaition, that's the rule you should follow.

Since I'm neither, I don't follow that rule; I prefer the more logical one of putting commas and periods inside the
quotation marks only if they are part of the quoted material. when a complete sentence is being quoted, it makes
sense to put the period inside, or a comma if it's taking the place of a period:

He said, "I'll do that when time permits."
    or
"I'll do that when time permits," he said.

But if you're quoting a sentecce fragment, which doesn't end with any punctuation, it makes sense to not include punctuation:

He said he'll do that "when time permits".
    or
He'll do that "when time permits", or so he said.

Having corresponded with MMP for more than a decade, I have a good idea how he'd respond. He's a champion of
American English, and likes to quote /CMOS/. However, since he probably considers it more important to never
ackowledge that you're right about anything, I suspect he won't be commenting.

Thanks again for helping correct the lies and misrepresentations and for helping set the record straight with the truth, GJD.

That should be efforts 'are' appreciated. Also, you have a comma splice in the "sentence," so you should (correctly) have a period, dash or a semi-colon after "put."

    You're welcome.

Again, thanks for pointing out my error, NancyGene.

Too bad you're unable to help Miguel and Bruce with their similar errors.

Miguel, as you know, needs help with commas and quotation marks, while Bruce (similar to Jim Senetto) has problems using the apostrophe.

Perhaps, "if time permits," you can help them sometimes, as well?

Miguel uses commas and quotation marks just fine.

    You've been tutoring Miguel?

He certainly wasn't using his commas and quotation marks very well earlier in this thread.

I can bump that post if you've forgotten it.
