The Expanse was awesome and the backer was a guy named Jeff Bezos who
is a big fan of scifi.

It was cancelled by the WWE channel and then Amazon took it over and completely ruined it from series 4 to 6 by ignoring the main plotline
from the books and filling it with nothing by boring irrelevant soap
opera including one episode which consisted entirely one of the
characters repeating the exact same routine over and over again for a
whole hour trying to stop herself suffocating by berating air from a
space suit or something.

What's your source on this, because these say otherwise:
IMDB rating
<https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3230854/ratings/?ref_=tt_ov_rat>
8.5/10 (average out of 193K ratings)
High numbers at Rotten Tomatoes as well: <https://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/the_expanse>

It was okay, but quickly ran out of sensible story ideas and had a tinge
of weirdness with the alien nonsense.

It seems to me they are trying to knit too many story-lines into one
Series that makes it difficult to follow.
Interesting storyline though. Earth v Asteroid Belt Settlements v Mars

I think it was better than just "okay"...but by the 5th season, yes,
you could tell that they were reaching with the story arcs (kind of
like the last season of Battlestar Galactica).

I didn't think it was *hard* to follow with all those story-lines.
With that said, one does have to actively pay attention while watching.
You can't have the show on in the background while washing the dishes...otherwise you will get lost.
The real "Battlestar Galactica" only had one season. :-p
(Plus an awful sequel show that was also only one season.)
It obviously wasn't that popular because the almighty ratings were bad enough that it was cancelled by the original network and had to be
picked up by a new one to continue. :-)
Coincidentally, the ridiculous "Lost" show was on in the background
while we were doing the dishes last night. :-)
(Nobody was actually watching it though - the TV was just on after
watching the previous show and ready for when we went back into the
lounge after finishing the dishes.)

That last season of 'Lost' was so disappointing.
They're really stretching it with unnecessary stuff, but
I'm still hoping for a good ending. Can't be any worse than
'Lost'.

You mean Galactica 1980? I remember that! I was a little kid, and I
watched it because it was SF, but it was so bad.
It didn't really have anything to do with Battlestar Galactica. The
premise was that the ships had reached Earch and it turned out that
Earth had lower gravity than all their worlds, so on Earth they have
great strength and (somehow) some other powers. The show was about a
bunch of kids from the ship, living on Earth, with powers.

Was it really about the ratings or was it because they weren't making
enough money because - at that time - not enough people were watching
it? Was it about quantity instead of quality?

A bit like the last season of Game of Thrones.

They would have to really drop the ball to end it THAT badly!

There was also time travel where they fought the Nazis and silly flying motorcycles (as if nobody would see them). :-\

Do you recall the Battlestar Galatica series from the late 1970s?

I don't remember the plots very well. There was one where the kids
joined a baseball team, but I think that was some kind of ploy for the
adults to catch some bad guys.

I remember reading that Gal80 was intended to teach kids history.

Not in any real sense. *Supposedly* the early timeslot the show played
in (in America) meant that it had to have "educational content", but in reality that simply means showing things like co-operation, problem- solving, etc. which is where the Space Scouts nonsense came in.
The "teach history" is complete nonsense. The original idea for the show
was to have more time travel as they chased Baltar through history, but
the network didn't like that idea, so only the couple of Nazi episodes remained.
