I've seen at least two anime movies about this character; there may or
may not have been a TV series or I may have misunderstood something
and they came directly from the books. Seeing the films might help, or
might not, but what you say about the situation seems very familiar.

Netflix has the (or a) anime tv series.

The Japanese are pretty good at multimedia releases, so I usually expect
there to be a book, a manga, anime, a live action film, and perhaps an all-female-cast opera.

I, on the other hand, have just seen the TV series, not the movies,
and have not read the 2 books. I'm curious how the movies stood up on
their own; at least one was supposed to be a direct sequel to the
    TV series.

The TV series was quite good; I'm a bit surprised at James's reaction
to the novel. Perhaps it is the translation, though there are reports
that the novel and the TV series are not consistent with each other.
The novel won a notable award (Grand Prize at the 5th Annual Kyoto Animation Festival), though there is the question of how it won the award in
March 2014 when the novel was first published in December 2015.

It could be an issue with the translation. It wasn't a pro translation.
