Five Novels About Coming of Age During the Apocalypse

Growing up is hard enough without the entire world falling apart around you.

    Zippo for me.

An awesome novel (one of my six star books) along these lines is
"Emergence" by David Palmer. Being 11 years old and thinking that you
are to repopulate the Earth can be sobering.

It has been so long since I read The Chrysalids that I don't remember
one thing you mentioned. I haven't read the other four you mentioned.

Leiber's "A Pail of Air" is a wonderful story that (I feel) fits here.
I also think Earth Abides and Station Eleven would fit. Earth Abides was
a pretty interesting read, but I found Station Eleven to be pretty boring.

    Just the Wyndham for me.

I know I read it as a teen. A few years ago I heard a BBC radio
dramatization, and like you was quite take aback by the
    genocide angle at the end.

In "Emergence", the Russians kill everyone on Earth except for 2,000+
mutated Homo Sapiens, now Homo Post Hominem, using a genengineered
virus. And that is the first chapter.

I dunno - I remember one Scout campout in a winter cabin and our guys
(about 12-13) had discovered the neighboring cabin was both unlocked
and had a 4' high stack of Playboy magazines...
