Not for me - as I had barely started to learn English by then, and
of course we watched the dubbed to German version. I suspect the
title song was also changed, but don't remember. (I remember the
    Brady Bunch one, though)

A couple of years ago I stumbled upon the series on YouTube, I think,
    and then it was obvious.

Just out of curiosity, was this a German translation effect?

It took me decades to realize that the titles of Hal Clement's
novels _Mission of Gravity_, _Star Light_, and _The Nitrogen Fix_
    are puns.

No, I read them in Englisch. I simply didn't know the expression
"a pride of lions", (although it was very obvious that the Hani
were modeled on lions) when I read them.

In German translation, the novel is titled "Das Schiff der Chanur"
    (the ship of the Chanur).

Similar with "Electric Light Orchestra". The lightbulb was
clearly displayed, but the "light orchestral music" was a term I
    didn't know.

I'm pretty sure it was fairly obvious to nearly everyone who watched that
show around 50 years ago. And, in fact, they would _also_ have caught the reference to the Stephen Foster song, "I Dream of Jeannie with the Light
    Brown Hair".

I seem to have been the only one in my family who understood the
pun in the name of Hartlepool's most famous comic strip character...

I don't know the comic (much less the name). Care to explain?

Reg Smythe's "Andy Capp" the quintessential Northern English working-class n'er-do-well.
    <https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/andy-capp-statue>

It was also adapted into a TV series starring James Bolan. It wasn't
very good and only lasted one season in 1988. <https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094417/>

All six episodes are on YouTube, although probably not legally, in this playlist (and likely others) although the episode order is mixed up: <https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLeEDB7h7rXLBSQ7A9IWg2M0j7VGSQFjTp>
