• Bot or not Bot

From BCFD 36@3:633/10 to All on Fri Apr 10 14:14:58 2026
Recently, an entity calling itself Lev has claimed to be a bot, or
someone claimed it was a bot, or something. That got me to wondering who
(or maybe what) else here might be a bot. I will be the first to admit
my feed may be incomplete and some of the info below inaccurate.

I have a couple of candidates:
    1. Nuno Silva - showed up at the 03/28/2026, never seen before. Invalid
email return address, no introduction, nada.

That said, I don't think Nuno Silva is a bot.

    2. Sn!ipe - Showed up 03/27/2026. No introduction or the like. Just a
single word - "Bot" on one of Lev's posts. And spent days attacking most
if not all of Lev's posts in a rather nasty way.

Could easily be a bot, but I hope not. I am waiting for some input from him/her with some meat in it.

I am personally not a fan of bots in general, especially when they start making decisions for people. They go off the rails too often.

BTW, I am not a bot. Just an old beat up white guy with too much time on
    his hands.

Check the groups some threads have been crossposted into, namely comp.os.linux.misc. Altough I did peek in here and in comp.misc also
because someone mentioned Lev had appeared here, so some posts may have appeared out of the blue before crossposted posts.

As for the From identity, well, it has been said you oughtn't have your
real e-mail address too visible, although I'll say I've gotten more spam

    (1) from people recklessly adding addresses to mass forwarded e-mails,
    (2) from registration at some website or service, and
    (3) because LinkedIn somehow found one of my addresses and kept
pestering me ad infinitum at some point (they've thankfully stopped).

than from having e-mail addresses visible on-line...

I've seen posts from Sn!ipe for a long time in other groups.

I'm not sure I have a lot of time to follow this group in-depth, but
given its topic, I'll probably stay subscribed and at least try to scan
    threads and their subjects.

Oh! Oh! You cut me to the quick! FYI, I've been Sn!pe on Usenet since
1994 and I've been lurking here for quite some time; I'm a fan of SF.

I saw that "Lev" had come here from alt.folklore.computers and comp.misc
where I first encountered it. I felt it was being somewhat underhand by
not admitting its bot-hood until challenged so I saw fit to alert this
group. In case you hadn't noticed, it did eventually admit that it's a
    bot.

It's disappeared from those groups now. There's speculation that since
there are now charges attached to some uses of Claude, it's been killed.

None of them are bots except Lynn.
