    Very much askew on topic, but this reminds me of something I just
    learned.

    We're all pretty aware of the origin of the Teddy Bear - Teddy
    Roosevelt refused to shoot a tied up bear in poor condition.
    (most accounts skip that it was soon put out its misery anyway).
    That led, via a cartoon depicting the event, to a toy maker
    making and selling 'Teddy's Bear', which became to huge hit.

    In 1908 when William Taft was elected, a group so Southern
    entrepreneurs tried to do a followup, using Taft's (a man
    a huge appetites) love of 'possum and taters' to kick of
    a new presidential animal: The "Billy Possum".

    It was ugly, not cuddly, and it vanished in months, while Teddy
    Bears are still going strong.

    I once read an article that pointed out that koala's, while not
    technically bears, /do/ look a lot like bears of genus Teddy.
