Re-read "Sky Coyote" by Kage Baker.
In this volume we learn of the Company known as "Dr.Zeus" and its
plans to insure that its existence is un-threatened by insuring history
by the use of Immortal Cyborg Agents sent far back in time to take
care of the Un-recorded history and the goods to be salvaged by
those agents. The cast of subsequent volumes in the History of
the Company is introduced either in person or in the memories
recalled by "Facilitator Joseph", his friend "Lewis" and "The botanist Mendoza". young "Administrator Latif" and thru memory of Joseph's own recruiter the "Enforcer Buda".
Mendoza was recruited by Joseph against Company regulations
as she is a Chrome Emitter. Not the shiny plating but a time
particle.
After 2355 CE there is no communication from the future.
Enforcers are being "retired" and Buda is missing.
The title role goes to Joseph as he facilitates the removal
of a Native American tribe in the area which will be Los Angeles
one day. He wears Coyote prosthesis for the part.

"Three Miles Down" by Harry Turtledove master of alternate
history Speculative Fiction is set in the 1970s and I have to say
he captures that time very well.
A marine biologist in his 20s a doctoral student is recruited
by what turns out to be the CIA. In the process of finding a
sunken Soviet submarine an alien spacecraft is discovered and
the Glomar Explorer under the pretext of mining magnesium
nodules is sent to the North-Western Pacific to recover that
space craft. The humanist Biologist plays the most important
role in attempt at alien contact.
This could be the start of a series as it ends with the true
beginning of alien contact as the Biologist and one of the
aliens look each other in the eyes.

"The Undead: a novel of modern Russia " by Sachkova, Svetlana
is Not Speculative Fiction but a novelization of Putin's suppression
of an Artist who is recruited in lieu of a prison sentence to work
for the State and is thereby corrupted.
It took me months to finish this story.
All these books were in the collection of the San Francisco Public
Library. I really like the first two but I may have wasted my time
with "The Undead" and it was a lot of time in bits and pieces
until we got to the point that the artist's silly film was suppressed.
It was a Zombie movie with Lenin as the lead revenant due to
a new preservation method invented by the people in charge
of the maintenance of the Corpses in Red Square.
bliss - who hoped the Undead would suppress the film.
