?In 1995 Dolly Parton started the Imagination Library, which has by now
gifted 332,411,218 books to children ages birth to 5. If you couldn?t
afford books for your baby, Dolly would send them to you. All you had to
do was register, and you too could read to your children before bed.
Your kids didn?t have to miss out because you had to pick between buying
books and keeping the lights on.?

Also contributed a million dollars to Moderna to aid in developing its mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccine. And I think she has been helpful to the
    LGBTQ community as well.

    Addendum:

Parton's music hath charms to soothe Wagoner's savage breast. From the
    comments under <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDqqm_gTPjc>:

She wrote this for Porter Wagoner. She didn't know how to tell
him she was leaving the show, so instead, she sang it to him
in his office. Throughout the years, he sued her, to which she
just responded by giving him a million dollars and continued
to care for him. He blew all the money by partying, and tried
to sue her again for a catalogue of music she owned. Instead
of getting mad and fighting it, Dolly just said, "You can have
it all for free". She took care of that man for decades,
despite how awful he was to her, and she even went to his
death bed and sang to him, holding his hand and keeping him
company. This is the essence of unconditional love and the
story of her great character. When she said, "I Will Always
Love You", she meant it. No matter what he did, no matter how
much he failed, she continued to love him until his dying day.
Dolly Parton is an incredibly wonderful person.

Philanthropy isn't political, it's just a good thing. No matter what your politics, if you have extra money you should be donating it to things that
make the world better. Humans have an obligation to help one another.

Politics causes us to disagree about WHAT makes the world better,
and therefore what to donate to. But that's a harder problem.

Actually, the huge size of her philanthropy may not have
been known widely. I didn't know it until now and I'm

seem off-kilter for the NYT and Washington Post to have run

Teaching humans to read and write? Isn't it bad enough that they've
    managed to talk?

However, a sad time like this is not really a time for jokes - or
political arguments (based on the fact that the college-educated
appear less likely to have voted for America's sitting President).

Helping children learn to read and write is definitely a worthy cause.
Just the other day, I was watching a "short" on YouTube in which
someone was asking teenagers on a beach... what two countries border
    the United States.

Several of them could not answer.

Ah, I think it may have been this video: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/SS1PBRis0qg

    - I recognize the teenagers, but it's possible this is a repackaging
of the actual video I had originally seen.

The conclusion drawn was that America, or at least its education
    system, is in sad decline.

Of course, I suppose an alternate conclusion might be that Canada and
Mexico are now two really unimportant and irrelevant countries, and so
the renaming of the "former" Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario by your
Dear Leader was entirely appropriate and even perhaps overdue.

Hey, what with fracking and now Venezuela, maybe you won't need our
oil - or Mexico's, they have some too that they sold to you - any
    longer.

But, as a Canadian, I find it difficult to agree with that, and so I
hope efforts like those of Dolly Parton continue, so that a greater
proportion of Americans finally acquire the ability to find Canada on
a map. At least if they're not doing so in order to invade it.

    P

I?ve noticed that ?leftists? are always causing trouble in his world. A
while back he posted about how Britain put troops in Belize in case the Nicuraguans came over the border. No doubt because they were evil left-wing Sandinistas. Nicaragua doesn?t have a border with Belize. Mexico is north,
the Caribbean Sea is east, and Guatelmala is west and south. South and east
of Guatemala is Houndras; Nicaragua is south and east of Hounduras. To get to Belize Nicuragua would first have to cross Hounduras and Guatemala.

Note that Guatelmala had a very right-wing military dictatorship government.

The threat to Belize was from rightists, not leftists.

He will never admit his error.

the world is becoming more diverse, whether culturally, ethnically, linguistically, however you want to measure it. Yes, it does mean the
dominance of the old European empires (and the USA, which is very much

Yes, it?s a threat to those cultures/groups which were in the

It probably bears no resemblance to reality any more than the far-right

The actuality behind it is that decades ago (still within living memory
of many baby-boomers), before the immigration laws were loosen in the
mid 1960s, what is now the census category Non-Hispanic White was the
vast majority of the population of the USA (IIRC, the descendants of

    "Great replacement"

is actually a conspiracy theory in which Certain Groups are trying to
replace White People with ... others.

Given that the White people promoting the theory are from the same
groups of White people whose behavior from Colonial times onward has
been, to say the least, deplorable (as opposed to those White people
who have at least managed to avoid some of the nastier behavior of
their cousins), replacement with people -- no matter where they come
from or what they look like -- might actually be a /good/ thing.

It appears to be a staple of the alt-right.

AFAIK, nobody's shot up a pizza parlor ceiling in Florida as a result
    of it. Yet.

Actually the immigration of the oppressed minorities from the Pale of Settlement, a Russian Empire construction in Eastern Europe which where
Jews were oppressed by the Czarist then hated by the local non-Jewish
people as they were only permitted the roles of Tax Farmer and various subsistence roles. And the Italian immigrants and Slav
made the WASPs very nervous and they began to hire the Irish

Indeed. These are the folks who murdered the women and
children of the Native tribes while calling them savages and devil
worshipers. Should be replaced but most of them are dead but their
    offspring continue the nonsense...

The replacements that they fear are competent people of color
and any color but White ASP. African people who have been in the
North American continent for nearly as long as any white people
are feared. G-d should protect any non-white person who knocks
at the door of a white person at an untimely hour or who shares

Oh what a benign view you project.

Every immigrant group has been oppressed by the prior
immigrants as they were by the WASPS and the Africans have been
repeatedly injured at every level of government despite the
fact they were brought here because someone in Africa wanted
to get rid of them some hundreds of years ago and our grandees
the plantation owners wanted free labor.

Look up the story of Robert Smalls, American politician
and former slave (1839-1915), Civil war hero, the 1st USN ship's
captain, State and Federal elected office holder.

And what made the immigration laws less loose before that? Surely there
must have been a prior tightening?
The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 did what it says.

The Emergency Quota Act of 1921 froze immigration quotas by country to
preserve the then-current ethnic mix. There were plenty of slots for
northern Europeans, and very few for other parts of the world. It wasn't repealed until 1965.

In the 1840s, "Irish need not apply" or "Protestant only" was the de-facto,
if not de-jure rule in a large part of the USA.
