My favorite bit of unexpected wildlife in the area is the Charlotte
Whale. The skeleton of a beluga whale was found buried in 1844 more than
100 feet above sea level, and a hundred miles from salt water.

The ice sheet in the last ice age pushed the land so far down, that when melting came, Lake Champlain was an inlet of the Atlantic, via what is
now the St. Lawrence River valley.

    Its about 10,000 years old.

Thank you. I had seen some YouTube videos noting that house hippos
were a uniquely Canadian thing. But I hadn't any idea what they were
    supposed to be.
I thought it was just some Ontario slang term with which I was not
familiar; like "couch potato", which is not an edible tuber that grows
in chesterfields, but rather someone who spends too much time sitting
    down and watching television.
