Check your calendar- Fall has hit. summer vacations are over
and families must be dealt with. Holidays at hand. 3 today! Time for
reading is limited. Time for participation is limited but they have

Sadly, if someone posts under a pseudonym, there's very little
we can do to follow up.

I've seen dozens of 'regulars' vanish from this group. In a
some cases, they're active under the same name elsewhere, but
    often there's no trace.

I've had similar kind of B.S. with Thunderbird. It's why I'm now feel-

Anyway, the move forward for me is to get rid of the Thunderbird. I

    point.

There is always third-party access to the kernel. In the Windows NT days
before Microsoft had figured out 1960s-style memory protection, any program
in user space could make changes to the kernel. And sometimes they
    accidentally did.

What the EU forced Microsoft to do was to DOCUMENT the kernel so that

There have always been back doors into the DOS, Win16, Win32, and
Win64 kernels. I document some of those on my website:
    https://www.winsim.com/diskid32/diskid32.html

I still have my Undocumented books (DOS, PC, Windows) and, somewhere a
very popular in its day list of IRQs that I downloaded at some point.

/Undocumented Windows/ pointed out that, as Windows evolved (this was
mostly about the 16-bit versions), Microsoft re-organized the APIs it
provided but left a stub in the original DLL to transfer the call to
whatever DLL it was now in.
I once used that to demonstrate that even a system that was clearly
designed could have "junk DNA" (superfluous code) in it.
This, of course, was back when "junk DNA" was Proof Positive against
    people being designed.

Now there is no "junk DNA"; indeed, the difference between Man and
Monkey appears to be all about the former "junk DNA", which kind of
blows a hole in gene theory, as the non-genes appear to be more
important than the genes in some respects.

    keep the
movie from being four hours long instead of just two and change.

That actually sounds like a good idea for extra content. Everyone loves=20 >Tom Bombadil, even though Tolkein himself said we were all making too=20
    much of him.

Let's hope the Colberts pere and fil have the hidden chops to do it=20 >right.=20

    But ... but ... but

-- if they do it "right" in the sense of following JRRT's story, it
will not agree with the other films, which tell PJ's version.
-- if the do it "right" in the sense of being compatible with PJ's
film, then it will not agree with JRRT's story

It cannot be "right" in both senses.

    =46or example:
-- in JRRT's story, the Hobbits obtain their swords from the
    Barrow-Wights barrow
-- in PJ's story, the Hobbits obtain their swords from Aragorn, who (presumably) went to the nearest cache of Hobbit-sized swords and
brought four back (one must imagine many such sites scattered
throughout the North for this to work) to Weathertop

So either they don't get their swords in the barrow, in which case the
film will be missing an important scene from the book, or PJ's film is
    shown to be=20

    wrong! wrong! wrong!

which, of course, it is in many ways.

Sadly, if someone posts under a pseudonym, there's very little
we can do to follow up.

I've seen dozens of 'regulars' vanish from this group. In a
some cases, they're active under the same name elsewhere, but
    often there's no trace.

I couldn't remember the name of the person who converted Dorothy Heydt's novel, The Interior Life" except his first name, Bill, so looked up old
posts of Dorothy's that I had kept and was amazed at the number of names
of posters who have disappeared. I didn't find Bill's surname.

So Bill Gill has scanned _TIL_ for me, and designated three
(well, four, including chapter titles) fonts for it, and I have
proofed and re-oroofed it till my eyes are ready to fall out of
my head, and sent it back to him.

And today I got the following email from him:

I have suggested that he spend a couple days on option (3). But
I think we need advice at this point, from people who have gone
    through this already.

(Though, probably, not with three fonts.)

Any ideas? LWE, I'm asking you in particular, since you put a

Depending on exactly why you want different fonts, you can try to make
do with the TeX Gyre collection, but it's typographically boring. It's
just a recreation of the classic PostScript fonts, but with a license
that allows you to embed them in your EPUB [1]. I have done this once,
as an experiment that I didn't finish; to create ffj ligatures which are
    useful for Icelandic.

    https://www.gust.org.pl/projects/e-foundry/tex-gyre

Back then, FontForge was sufficient to create the ligature(s), but nowa-
days I'm not sure I'd use the same tool. You can use TeX Gyre as a
starting point for your own fonts, or create some from scratch for your
    book [2].

    Best wishes, and happy typography!

[1] Or at least, that's how I recall thei license.

[2] Ok, I /doubt/ anyone will take this challenge, but if you don't have
a budget to buy a font, nor hire a font designer, your options are limi-
    ted.

Side note, apparently, when Moby Dick is used in a classroom, it's com-

It's also common for the students to completely miss it, based on early internet memes.

Thank you for that information, especially your quotation from Bill Gill

    J. Clarke was a prolific poster. I do not recall why he left.
Quadibloc, (Four Bricks in an Otherwise Empty Skull), posted recently as
John Savard. He has had a long absence after being confronted with facts
which questioned his belief that the word of the White House Press
Secretary was sacred. I suspect this belief may have been further
shattered once the Orange American Saviour began his crusade. Or perhaps
he learnt that the so called Maiden Revolution was actually an armed
rebellion that, with the covert assistance of the US, overthrew the democratically elected government, that it was West Ukrainian Nazi
snipers on roof tops who murdered the dozen plus police AND the hundred
plus protesters. Or perhaps he noticed that despite millions of words
reporting on Epstein in the traditional US media, the word Israel has
yet to appear. Or perhaps he read that although the Democrats spent
$30million investigating Russian influence on the last presidential
election, nothing of consequence was discovered.

mock up AIs are in the laboratory. They're not talking about Claude or
Gemini when they shiver with fright.

This is why they are continuing with 'official' AIs such as Meta &
Midjourney. Efforts are being made to derail & sabotage these people who aren't taking care while constructing their AI. If you need a handy
reference, all AI lessor than Siri are considered fraudulent.

Seems like AI slop to me.

Einstein did not invent any sort of atomic bomb.
Why would a German patent office clerk read Chinese patents?
How could he? I have no information on the ability of
    AE to read Chinese.

He developed theories that permitted the Germans
to start developing an nuclear bomb. When he learned of
this he and other scientists convinced Roosevelt to create
the Manhattan project which created the atomic fission bombs
    used on Japan.

Germany had been beaten before Japan but we found
out they were following the wrong track to a bomb.

Read that fantasy post was a waste of time.

I went in the Library to read all sorts of books
and became neither a fiction author, a humorist, nor an
engineer but sharpshooter badges in the Military only
    take practice.
