The Dark Tower. Stephen King. Spoilers. The Ending.
I enjoyed books 1.The Gunslinger, 4.Wizard and Glass and 7.The Dark
Tower especially from Blue Heaven onward.
Spoilers follow.
My first thought when I reached the end of book seven was of Iain Banks' "Walking on Glass" because of the similar ending to one of the sub-plots
in that book but other than that there was not a parallel because the
context in Banks' story was that history repeats and for his particular characters, their behaviour and fate was predetermined but Roland's
later action of pocketing the horn suggests variations of outcomes. My
second thought was Sisyphus, that Roland was being punished because
before leaving the Tower, he remembered that he had been there before
perhaps many times but again because he now has the horn, the
implication is that his next attempt might be successful. But Sisyphus
probably had the same thought. (With the horn in his pocket, Roland
might not have room for the jawbone.)
I didn't know who Gary Hart, (USA Democrat Presidential nomination
runner), was at the time of reading but in context it was to be regarded
as a positive thing in Susannah's new world as well as the suggested
reunion with Eddie, Jake and Oy, thereby providing justification for
Roland's beliefs. Initially I found this strange because it would be
positive to Democrats and negative to Republicans but if Susannah's
political preference had been declared, (I don't remember), then it
could be apolitical but yet again undermining Roland by dethroning
another gunslinger, Reagan.
