• {Commentary} Cyberpunk 2077, no spoilers

From Johann 'Myrkraverk' Oskarsson@3:633/10 to All on Mon Oct 26 15:45:31 2026
    Dear rec.arts.sf.written,

This time I chose not to cross post to alt.usage.english, so please let
me know if that should happen, or just start cross posting yourself.

So, /Cyberpunk 2077/ is a video game, and I honestly haven't played much
-- not enough to comment on the game play -- but I can comment on the
    script.

    It. Is. Atrocious.

I mean, the very first minutes should have been dragging me into the
game world, with the goal of getting me excited about what's going to
    happen in the story.

It didn't. The start of the game is highly disinteresting. It's about
less interesting than the real world. And I can play that just fine.

I suppose this is /peak game story/ since this game is very famous, and
was quite popular a few years ago. I admit to having had some skepti-
cism about its entertainment value, and waited for a discount.

But it doesn't exactly showcase good storytelling, nor -- at the very
beginning -- well thought out game world. I honestly don't know what
the writers were smoking, but I want none of it.

I'll let this be it for now, and may comment further once I've played
the game some more, which will probably not be today. There's only so
much bad storytelling I admit in a single sitting. Call it resting acc-
ording to the Dungeons & Dragons rules, if you will. Best wishes, and
    happy game stories!

You have to make a better choice about your starting class. Like Dragon
Age, there is a different beginning relative to whomever you choose as
your protagonist. For example, the Electrical Engineer (like me) starts
out in a garage checking out a refurbished Volvo.

To complain about the story after just beginning, well how many of the
intros did you look at? Aren't there like 12?

"Secret Agent. How much is that?"

Can you strip away so we may start again?
    "There?s a switch and they don't
    seem authentic or themselves. It
    feels like I?m an unnecessary
body and it?s a waste of time to
even be there." -- Grim, playful Blaine.

I don't know. I compare and contrast the introduction to Jade Empire
(2005), and that has a much better introduction that doesn't make me
hate the story, nor the world.

I mean, those are two different stories, but here I'm merely talking
about the storytelling, not the story. Or at least, I'm trying to.

I believe I played approximately the same amount of minutes of either
game, before coming to my /conclusion/ of the story.

I guess there are some aspects of the /world/ in Cyberpunk 2077 that I
don't like, but still, the story could be better.

Best wishes, and happy game stories!
