I watched "The Entire History of Language ? When Humans First Talked (7 Million Years?Today)," a three-hour documentary of communication
evolution in primates.

This is a great deep dive which begins with communication before we were human, and then tracks the development of our more complex system. This
is almost entirely archeological, focusing on physiological changes
rather than on the interplay between brain and language and
consciousness, but the physical side is where it all begins.
This channel is intended for half-attention, but unlike most such, the
whole thing is one coherent video essay with one structure. I'll
probably watch more of it. I love how the very long form allowed it to
tie in information about related things like music development, without rushing.
This channel suggests that homo habilis may have had somewhat advanced communication, based on their culture. Though they didn't have the
apparatus for speech, they did convey information which would be
difficult to learn through simple imitation. They may have used a
combination of sounds and gestures.
Neanderthals probably spoke and heard about as well as we did. I still
suspect they had somewhat less communication ability cognitively,
because sapiens are the ones who began communicating with other species (specifically, wolves). If the neanders had been able to do that, they
would likely have outcompeted us.
I also watched more ST:TOS, including "Court Martial." Kirk's on trial. Starfleet personnel are put on trial a lot, by their own side and
others. Kirk's innocent, of course.
