• What Did You Watch? 2025-09-01 (Monday) & 2025-09-02 (Tuesday)

    From Ian J. Ball@3:633/10 to All on Wed Sep 3 06:05:45 2025
I've been working hard over the last two days to get ready for the start
of the semester (which is today (Wed)), so I haven't watched much.

Labor Day (Mon) was basically a write-off - there was nothing on (not
even sports, really). Even the GH was a rerun! All I got through were
episodes of Y&R and DOOL from late last week.

I did stumble across "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" on one of the HBO's -
I think this may be one of my favorite flicks! I always put it on when I stumble across it. So many people are in this flick!!

Yesterday (Tues), all I got through was:

Another ep. of Y&R - Kyle finally admits to Claire that he kissed Audra
in order to "sting" her, and Claire doesn't take the news well; more
Cane machinations: he's telling everyone his plan is off, but to Amanda
the lawyer seems to indicate his plan is still on.

DOOL - Hey, who woke up Rachel Boyd?! She's been lackluster as the "poor
me!" pregnant girl, but in this episode she perked way up playing Sophia
the bitch (which we knew she can do from her Lifetime flick) - she's not
as good a bitch as Sophia #1 at this, but Boyd is way better playing the "bitch" than "poor me!"... Also, Cat Green manages to get a job as EJ's assistant, so she can spy on him.

    What did you watch?

This is on my rewatch list. Along with an Edgar Wright movie marathon
in general as well checking out the new Scott Pilgrim TV series. I'm
going to try and get all of that knocked out before the upcoming
"Running Man" remake directed by Edgar Wright.

    What did you watch?

    I watched:

Alien: Earth - "In Space, No One..." - Episode 5 of the series set in
the Alien/Predator universe. This episode is a flashback depicting what occurred on the Maginot leading to the ship crashing on Earth. This was
a really good episode, probably the best so far. It was basically a
retelling of "Alien" except what if the Nostromo picked up multiple
different hostile aliens. If you think you're in trouble with a single Xenomorph on your ship, just imaginary having a Xenomporph, the eyeball
alien, and the "ticks" or whatever they were, all lose at the *same*
time! And let's not forget a cyborg who may be a "little bit twitchy."
You are definitely dying! The highlight of the episode was probably
seeing the eyeball alien in action. In particular, and I won't say too
much about this, but any scene that had both the eyeball alien and
Xenomorph sharing the screen was pure joy.

I've been making my way through the movies in the "Conjuring" universe.
I watched some of them over the two days. I think once I finish all the movies I'll do a full recap.

It's a little weird because I'm not familiar with the franchise, and I
decided to watch them in chronological order instead of release order
(like half of them are prequels). So as I make my way through them,
there are scenes barely referenced in the original movies that are fully explored in the prequels. For example in the original movie they will
show a child's drawing and say this child drew this picture of "X" and
that's the entire scene and all you know about "X." Then the prequel is
all about "X" and I watched the prequel first. But I'm sure there are
tons of references that I'm just not getting because I'm watching them
    in chronological order.

I watched an old disaster movie called TIDAL WAVE: NO ESCAPE, starring Corbin Bernsen. The female lead was Bruce Springsteen's ex-wife, Julianne Phillips. I'd forgotten all about her. She was big in the 90s, then just stopped acting and hasn't been in anything since. She was quite the biscuit back in her day. The movie was meh, but she was dazzling.

So which order do you recommend?

That's hard to answer. I've never seen most of them before, and I'm at
a point now where I've haven't seen any of the movies I'm about to watch
next. But it's a bit too late to try and change now.

I'm so used to watching movies that I have seen before reordered chronologically that it never occurred to me to watch these in release
order. I think if you've seen them before chronological. If like me
you've never seen them before, maybe in release order. But I'm only
    about half way through them.

One point of confusion I will mention. One of the movies ends with a
time jump and, I think, new characters being introduced who are then
promptly killed. I really didn't get what was going on. But then in a different movie I realized that the ending of the previous movie was
filling in the back story for the beginning of another movie. It's
those types of things that someone who saw them in release order would
realize what's going on but I was left confused. Who are these people
and why are they being introduced at the end just to be killed?

What I didn't get (and the time jump made it confusing for me) was the
prequel movie was also telling the backstory of the killer. Who the
killer was and why they killed those people. But the killer character themselves is barely even mentioned in the main movie. So the prequels
are also giving backstories of characters who would otherwise be obscure.

Think of a prequel to "Poltergeist" that focuses entirely on the older daughter's never seen boyfriend. Then at the end of the prequel there's
a time jump to him driving the older daughter home in time to see her
house implode. You'd be confused wondering who is this girl who is
suddenly in the movie and why is her house imploding. It was sort of
    like that.
