Beloved Prime Video Show Gets Prequel Series, Cast Announced
    ------------------------------------------------------------
A beloved Prime Video show is getting a prequel series.

Produced by Amazon Studios and Fabrik Entertainment, Bosch
premiered on Prime Video in 2014. Starring Titus Welliver as
Hieronymus "Harry" Bosch, the show ran for seven seasons before
reaching its end. There have also been two spin-off sequel
shows, Bosch: Legacy and Ballard, the latter of which was
recently renewed for a second season.

What Prime Video show is getting a prequel series?
Per Deadline, it has now been announced that a new Bosch
prequel show, titled Bosch: Start of Watch, is in the works and
will premiere on MGM+. The show will star Cameron Monaghan
(Shameless) as a younger Harry Bosch, while Omari Hardwick
(Power) will play his training officer, Eli Bridges.

"There is no direct source material for?Start of Watch?since
[character creator Michael Connelly's] novels do not include a
Bosch?prequel, though bits and pieces from Harry's early years
are planted in various books in the universe, with Connelly
calling the prequel uncharted character territory," Deadline's
    article notes.

The show "goes back to 1991 Los Angeles and follows 26-year-old
Harry Bosch (Monaghan) during his earliest days as a rookie cop.
The series will explore a city on the edge, teeming with racial
tension, gang violence, and a fractured LAPD. Amid routine calls
and growing unrest, Bosch finds himself drawn into a
high-profile heist and a web of criminal corruption that will
test his loyalty to the badge and shape his future as the
detective who lives by the code, 'Everybody counts or nobody
    counts.'"

Bosch: Start of Watch is co-created and executive produced by
Tom Bernardo, who will serve as the series' showrunner, and Brian
Anthony. Connelly, Henrik Bastin, Jamie Boscardin Martin, and
Jasmine Russ also serve as executive producers.

Bernardo said in a statement, "It's a terrific privilege to be
able to explore both the origins of this iconic character and the
Los Angeles that formed him in the early 1990s. In telling the
story of a young Harry Bosch, we want to honor the faith of
Michael Connelly's legion of readers and the amazing audience
    that tuned into?Bosch?and?Bosch: Legacy?over the years. We're
excited to embark on this journey."

A premiere date for Bosch: Start of Watch has not yet been
    announced.

I'm a big fan of Bosch so I'll certainly have a look at this when it eventually gets released.

On a related note, I was in a store the other day and noticed a new
Connolly novel that had "A Bosch and Ballard novel" highlighted on it.
I've forgotten the title but I *think* the cover blurb said that Bosch's daughter Maddy was in the book as a cop. I wonder if we'll see that
    happen in Ballard too?

There's one really odd thing about this listing: the pricing. The
hardcover version is cheaper than the mass market paperback! (The fact
that the paperback was $13.99 Canadian dissuaded me from buying it.)

I haven't bought a paperback novel in a few years but the last time I
looked at them, they were $10.99 which already seemed high. I looked at several other paperbacks in the drug store as well and they were all
13.99 so that must be the standard price these days. I assume the prices
have gone up due to Trump's tariffs.

I really don't understand why hardcovers are actually cheaper.
Historically, they have ALWAYS been significantly more expensive,
presumably due to the materials used in the covers and the more
intricate binding. I don't understand why they'd be cheaper than
    paperbacks now.

Just FYI, https://www.bookseriesinorder.com is a great
resource for books-by-auther and often includes the date/title
of the next due out in a series.

It doesn't cover all authors, but most of the mystery/thriller
genre names are in there as well as many of the cozy mystery
    authors.

Yeah, prices have gone haywire over the past few years.
And often books are only available in one format, mostly
what we used to call trade paperback. Large format, wider
margins like a hardback, but a paper cover.

I look back through my older books and find prices like 35
cents for a mass market paperback. <sigh> And the editing
was MUCH better back then with lots fewer typos and silliness
I'm finding in more recent books like refering to one
character by another character's name or even two different
spellings for the same character's name.

And get off my lawn! ;)

Nyssa, who has even read a book recently that had several
paragraphs repeated within the same couple of pages :/

see that happen in Ballard too?

Maddy's already been seen in Legacy as a cop. But in the book series,
I'm not sure she's been written in as one.

I found the new book online and the blurb definitely mentions Maddie
(not Maddy) Bosch working with Ballard in the Cold Case squad:

    https://www.indigo.ca/en-ca/the-waiting-a-ballard-and-bosch-novel/9780316563802.html?searchType=products&searchTerm=Michael%20Connelly

That came out last year. He started a new series, the first book of
which, The Proving, was published this year.

I assume the prices have gone up due to Trump's tariffs.

I really don't understand why hardcovers are actually cheaper.
Historically, they have ALWAYS been significantly more expensive,
presumably due to the materials used in the covers and the more
intricate binding. I don't understand why they'd be cheaper than
    paperbacks now.

Beloved Prime Video Show Gets Prequel Series, Cast
    Announced
    ------------------------------------------------------------
A beloved Prime Video show is getting a prequel series.

Produced by Amazon Studios and Fabrik Entertainment,
Bosch premiered on Prime Video in 2014. Starring Titus
Welliver as Hieronymus "Harry" Bosch, the show ran for
seven seasons before reaching its end. There have also
been two spin-off sequel shows, Bosch: Legacy and
Ballard, the latter of which was recently renewed for a
    second season.

What Prime Video show is getting a prequel series?
Per Deadline, it has now been announced that a new
Bosch prequel show, titled Bosch: Start of Watch, is in
the works and will premiere on MGM+. The show will star
Cameron Monaghan (Shameless) as a younger Harry Bosch,
while Omari Hardwick (Power) will play his training
    officer, Eli Bridges.

"There is no direct source material for Start of Watch
since [character creator Michael Connelly's] novels do
not include a Bosch prequel, though bits and pieces
from Harry's early years are planted in various books
in the universe, with Connelly calling the prequel
    uncharted character territory," Deadline's article
    notes.

The show "goes back to 1991 Los Angeles and follows
26-year-old Harry Bosch (Monaghan) during his earliest
days as a rookie cop. The series will explore a city on
the edge, teeming with racial tension, gang violence,
and a fractured LAPD. Amid routine calls and growing
unrest, Bosch finds himself drawn into a high-profile
heist and a web of criminal corruption that will test
his loyalty to the badge and shape his future as the
detective who lives by the code, 'Everybody counts or
    nobody counts.'"

Bosch: Start of Watch is co-created and executive
produced by Tom Bernardo, who will serve as the series'
showrunner, and Brian Anthony. Connelly, Henrik Bastin,
Jamie Boscardin Martin, and Jasmine Russ also serve as
    executive producers.

Bernardo said in a statement, "It's a terrific
privilege to be able to explore both the origins of
this iconic character and the Los Angeles that formed
him in the early 1990s. In telling the story of a young
Harry Bosch, we want to honor the faith of Michael
Connelly's legion of readers and the amazing audience
that tuned into Bosch and Bosch: Legacy over the years.
We're excited to embark on this journey."

A premiere date for Bosch: Start of Watch has not yet
    been announced.

"Ren‚e Ballard and the LAPD's Open-Unsolved Unit get a hot shot DNA connection between a recently arrested man and a serial rapist and murderer who went
quiet two decades ago. The arrested man is only twenty-four, so the genetic link must be familial: His father was the Pillowcase Rapist, responsible for a five-year reign of terror in the City of Angels. But when Ballard and her team move in on their suspect, they encounter a baffling web of secrets and legal hurdles."

The Pillowcase Rapist is a real guy. Christopher Hubbart is a sexually
violent predator who was convicted of dozens of rapes and other sexual
assaults in California between the 1970s and 1990s. He earned his nickname for muffling his victims' screams with a pillowcase. And, of course, our wonderful government has turned him loose. A guy who has admitted to more than 40 rapes and they think he shouldn't be in prison anymore. (And those are just the ones he's confessed to.) He's been released in the past and almost immediately re-arrested for committing all-new sexual assaults. Yet the psychopaths
running the government insist that he not be in prison and out on the streets with the rest of us.

I've often found they don't have more recent ones listed

I'm usually more interested in the back catalog to fill in
missing books in series. If I don't see and 'coming soon'
titles, it's easy enough to visit a bookstore site and
search for any new books from an author. The website I
mentioned is at least a handy starting place.

I've been reading more of the old stuff. Got through all
of Travis McGee, and now I'm reading some of Raymond
Chandler's Philip Marlowe series. Very politically
incorrect by today's standards, but the guy had a way
with words unlike anything I've read by more modern
    authors and good stories.

I've never understood why Jane Austen is held up as
such a wonderful writer. Just not my genre, I guess,
so I'll stick to the noir and hard-boiled stuff along
with various non-fiction books as a break from all
    the spilled blood.

Thanks, that could be handy, especially for getting into book series.
For instance, I'm just rereading the original Foundation Trilogy and am
toying with the idea of reading the prequels and sequels but I'm not

There's one really odd thing about this listing: the
pricing. The hardcover version is cheaper than the mass
market paperback! (The fact that the paperback was $13.99
Canadian dissuaded me from buying it.)

I haven't bought a paperback novel in a few years but the
last time I looked at them, they were $10.99 which already
seemed high. I looked at several other paperbacks in the
drug store as well and they were all 13.99 so that must be
the standard price these days. I assume the prices have
gone up due to Trump's tariffs.

I really don't understand why hardcovers are actually
cheaper. Historically, they have ALWAYS been significantly
more expensive, presumably due to the materials used in
the covers and the more intricate binding. I don't
understand why they'd be cheaper than paperbacks now.

Yeah, prices have gone haywire over the past few years.
And often books are only available in one format, mostly
what we used to call trade paperback. Large format, wider
margins like a hardback, but a paper cover.

I have often bought trade paperback over hardcover just because of the
    price. >

    I was really disappointed when I read a hardcover non-fiction book -
David Simon's book The Corner - and found 9 typos in it and that was
probably 20 years ago. It sounds like the editing has gotten much worse
    in recent books.

Mind you, editing in general has gotten really crappy. I see it all the
time in news reports on websites. I still remember reading a report
about a rescue that was done of a scientist in Antarctica. The reporter described the plane that flew in to rescue him as originating from Chile
and then flying to Antarctica via Edmonton, Alberta! Can you imagine??

I actually wrote to that website and objected to the writer's complete ignorance of geography in thinking that routing made an iota of sense.
(I also knew that Canada, for some reason, has developed a specialty in
such rescues and that they normally originate from Edmonton and fly to Antarctica via Chile.) I got a nice email back from the editor and he apologized. He was operating a small website and had been away for a few
days and let one of his young reporters edit her own work.

That's quite a reasonable explanation but how do major publishing houses justify making the kinds of mistakes we've both scene? They're supposed
to be professional and have trained, skilled staff plus all kinds of
software to help with editing, spelling, etc.

That came out last year. He started a new series, the first book of

Maddy's already been seen in Legacy as a cop. But in the book series,
I'm not sure she's been written in as one.

I found the new book online and the blurb definitely mentions Maddie

    https://www.indigo.ca/en-ca/the-waiting-a-ballard-and-bosch-novel/9780316563802.html?searchType=products&searchTerm=Michael%20Connelly

"Ren‚e Ballard and the LAPD's Open-Unsolved Unit get a hot shot DNA connection
between a recently arrested man and a serial rapist and murderer who went quiet two decades ago. The arrested man is only twenty-four, so the genetic link must be familial: His father was the Pillowcase Rapist, responsible for a
five-year reign of terror in the City of Angels. But when Ballard and her team
move in on their suspect, they encounter a baffling web of secrets and legal hurdles."

The Pillowcase Rapist is a real guy. Christopher Hubbart is a sexually violent predator who was convicted of dozens of rapes and other sexual assaults in California between the 1970s and 1990s. He earned his nickname for
muffling his victims' screams with a pillowcase. And, of course, our wonderful
government has turned him loose. A guy who has admitted to more than 40 rapes and they think he shouldn't be in prison anymore. (And those are just the ones
he's confessed to.) He's been released in the past and almost immediately re-arrested for committing all-new sexual assaults. Yet the psychopaths running the government insist that he not be in prison and out on the streets with the rest of us.

I'm happy to say that at least one serial rapist in this country is very unlikely to ever get out of prison. He committed a whole bunch of rapes
but hadn't been caught. Then, he and his wife collaborated on killing
three women, the first of which was his wife's younger sister. (That
first murder wasn't recognized as a murder even after the killers had
admitted they doped her up to make her pliable so that he could rape
her.) Even then he didn't get caught by police but he started beating on
his wife and *she* turned him in. It cost her a 12 year prison sentence
but she expected to be paroled well before that was over. However,
public pressure was so intense they made her serve the whole 12 years.
(She has long since served her sentence and has reputedly left the
country.) But her ex-hubby, Paul Bernardo, is unlikely ever to get out
of the Graybar Hotel. There *is* a small chance that he can get parole
after he has served his 25 years.

Beloved Prime Video Show Gets Prequel Series, Cast
    Announced
    ------------------------------------------------------------
A beloved Prime Video show is getting a prequel
    series.

Produced by Amazon Studios and Fabrik Entertainment,
Bosch premiered on Prime Video in 2014. Starring
Titus Welliver as Hieronymus "Harry" Bosch, the show
ran for seven seasons before reaching its end. There
have also been two spin-off sequel shows, Bosch:
Legacy and Ballard, the latter of which was recently
    renewed for a second season.

What Prime Video show is getting a prequel series?
Per Deadline, it has now been announced that a new
Bosch prequel show, titled Bosch: Start of Watch, is
in the works and will premiere on MGM+. The show will
star Cameron Monaghan (Shameless) as a younger Harry
Bosch, while Omari Hardwick (Power) will play his
    training officer, Eli Bridges.

"There is no direct source material for Start of
Watch since [character creator Michael Connelly's]
novels do not include a Bosch prequel, though bits
and pieces from Harry's early years are planted in
various books in the universe, with Connelly calling
    the prequel uncharted character territory,"
    Deadline's article notes.

The show "goes back to 1991 Los Angeles and follows
26-year-old Harry Bosch (Monaghan) during his
earliest days as a rookie cop. The series will
explore a city on the edge, teeming with racial
tension, gang violence, and a fractured LAPD. Amid
routine calls and growing unrest, Bosch finds himself
drawn into a high-profile heist and a web of criminal
corruption that will test his loyalty to the badge
and shape his future as the detective who lives by
the code, 'Everybody counts or nobody counts.'"

Bosch: Start of Watch is co-created and executive
produced by Tom Bernardo, who will serve as the
series' showrunner, and Brian Anthony. Connelly,
Henrik Bastin, Jamie Boscardin Martin, and Jasmine
Russ also serve as executive producers.

Bernardo said in a statement, "It's a terrific
privilege to be able to explore both the origins of
this iconic character and the Los Angeles that formed
him in the early 1990s. In telling the story of a
young Harry Bosch, we want to honor the faith of
Michael Connelly's legion of readers and the amazing
audience that tuned into Bosch and Bosch: Legacy over
the years. We're excited to embark on this journey."

A premiere date for Bosch: Start of Watch has not yet
    been announced.

I'm a big fan of Bosch so I'll certainly have a look
at this when it eventually gets released.

On a related note, I was in a store the other day and
noticed a new Connolly novel that had "A Bosch and
Ballard novel" highlighted on it. I've forgotten the
title but I *think* the cover blurb said that Bosch's
daughter Maddy was in the book as a cop. I wonder if
we'll see that happen in Ballard too?

Maddy's already been seen in Legacy as a cop. But in
the book series, I'm not sure she's been written in as
    one.

I found the new book online and the blurb definitely

    in the Cold Case squad:

Just FYI, https://www.bookseriesinorder.com is a great
resource for books-by-auther and often includes the
date/title of the next due out in a series.

It doesn't cover all authors, but most of the
mystery/thriller genre names are in there as well as many
    of the cozy mystery authors.

I've often found they don't have more recent ones listed
    though.

I'm not one for Austin's books either, and others of that genre or era.

Nyssa, who still misses Borders Books

Thanks, that could be handy, especially for getting into book series.
For instance, I'm just rereading the original Foundation Trilogy and am toying with the idea of reading the prequels and sequels but I'm not
sure of the proper order to read them. I don't imagine they count as mysteries or thrillers though so I'm probably going to be out of luck
for that series ;-) But that website should be handy for things like Connelly's books.

It does have some scifi series on there too, and there's other book
series sites who would have them.

(not Maddy) Bosch working with Ballard in the Cold Case squad:

    https://www.indigo.ca/en-ca/the-waiting-a-ballard-and-bosch-
    novel/9780316563802.html?
    searchType=products&searchTerm=Michael%20Connelly

That came out last year. He started a new series, the first book of
which, The Proving, was published this year.

There's one really odd thing about this listing: the pricing. The
hardcover version is cheaper than the mass market paperback! (The
fact that the paperback was $13.99 Canadian dissuaded me from buying
    it.)

I haven't bought a paperback novel in a few years but the last time
I looked at them, they were $10.99 which already seemed high. I
looked at several other paperbacks in the drug store as well and
they were all 13.99 so that must be the standard price these days. I
assume the prices have gone up due to Trump's tariffs.

I really don't understand why hardcovers are actually cheaper.
Historically, they have ALWAYS been significantly more expensive,
presumably due to the materials used in the covers and the more
intricate binding. I don't understand why they'd be cheaper than
    paperbacks now.

Get a library card. All the books you want to read for free.

Actually, I have a library card. But the library isn't terribly
conveniently located for me. These days, I mostly find my books "on
    the gray" ;-)

I don't know if it's available in Canada but our libraries have ebook services - hoopla, and Libby. Not only can you check out books from your
own library, but also from others. Yes you have to use an ereader, but
you get used to it and you don't have to leave your living room to check
out books. Look up your library's website and see if they offer
    something like this.

We have Hoopla; I've never heard of Libby but it may be at our library too.

    I had looked at Hoopla to watch videos but found it was too restrictive;
you can only watch 5 videos a month and I wanted to binge watch a show.

I haven't looked at the rules with respect to books but if they're not
too onerous, I would consider using Hoopla. Thanks for the suggestion.

Yeah, prices have gone haywire over the past few years.
And often books are only available in one format, mostly
what we used to call trade paperback. Large format, wider
margins like a hardback, but a paper cover.

Publishers these days often release the hardback version, then the
large 'trade paperback' version, then the smaller 'mass market'
paperback version. With each version, the price drops. It's partly a
matter of greed by the publisher - trying to get more money out of the
fad readers who have to be "first" to read a new book.

Unfortunately that last small paperback version can be a year or more
later before it gets released, sometimes not at all, and there's never
any way to tell if the publisher is actually going to do that with a particular book. Places like Amazon sometimes have a placeholder /
pre-order webpage for other versions, but that's still no guarantee
that it will actually be released in such a format.

I look back through my older books and find prices like 35 cents for a
    mass market paperback.

Yep. Like everything else, book prices keep going up and up. :-(

<sigh> And the editing was MUCH better back then with lots fewer typos
and silliness I'm finding in more recent books like refering to one character by another character's name or even two different spellings
    for the same character's name.

And get off my lawn! ;)

Nyssa, who has even read a book recently that had several
paragraphs repeated within the same couple of pages :/

Thanks, that could be handy, especially for getting into book series.
For instance, I'm just rereading the original Foundation Trilogy and am
toying with the idea of reading the prequels and sequels but I'm not
sure of the proper order to read them. I don't imagine they count as
mysteries or thrillers though so I'm probably going to be out of luck
for that series ;-) But that website should be handy for things like
    Connelly's books.

It does have some scifi series on there too, and there's other book
series sites who would have them.

The Internet Book Database and Internet Book List websites used to be
great resources, similar to the movie-based IMDB.com except for books,
but they have both closed down. :-(

if they have Kanopy which is another video app.

I've often found they don't have more recent ones listed
    though.

Be sure to tell us who killed the chauffeur Owen Taylor in THE BIG SLEEP.

I've never understood why Jane Austen is held up as
such a wonderful writer. Just not my genre, I guess,
so I'll stick to the noir and hard-boiled stuff along
with various non-fiction books as a break from all
    the spilled blood.

I'm a big fan of Bosch so I'll certainly have a look at
this when it eventually gets released.

But in the
book series, I'm not sure she's been written in as one.

I found the new book online and the blurb definitely
mentions Maddie (not Maddy) Bosch working with Ballard in
    the Cold Case squad:

Just FYI, https://www.bookseriesinorder.com is a great
resource for books-by-auther and often includes the date/title
of the next due out in a series.

It doesn't cover all authors, but most of the mystery/thriller
genre names are in there as well as many of the cozy mystery
    authors.

Thanks, that could be handy, especially for getting into book series.
For instance, I'm just rereading the original Foundation Trilogy and am toying with the idea of reading the prequels and sequels but I'm not
sure of the proper order to read them.

    Publication order

This is the order in which these books were published. This is the order in which readers were originally able to read these stories and shows the development of Asimov's writing, and this series, over time.

    Foundation and Earth [FOUNDATION]
    Prelude to Foundation [FOUNDATION]
    Forward the Foundation [FOUNDATION]

Isaac Asimov's "kind of guide to the series"

In the Author's Note for 'Prelude to Foundation', Isaac Asimov wrote:

When I wrote Foundation, which appeared in the May 1942 issue of Astounding Science Fiction, I had no idea that I had begun a series of stories that
would eventually grow into six volumes and a total of 650,000 words (so
far). Nor did I have any idea that it would be unified with my series of
short stories and novels involving robots and my novels involving the
Galactic Empire for a grand total (so far) of fourteen volumes and a total
    of about 1,450,000 words.
In the 1980s, Asimov wrote two sequels to the original Foundation trilogy: 'Foundation's Edge' and 'Foundation and Earth'. He also completed his
Robots trilogy with 'The Robots of Dawn', and wrote a book linking this
Robots trilogy to the Foundation series: 'Robots and Empire'. Following
these books, Asimov then wrote 'Prelude', which was the first prequel to
the Foundation stories. Therefore, as he further wrote in this Author's
    Note:

[...] the situation has become sufficiently complicated for me to feel that
the readers might welcome a kind of guide to the series, since they were
not written in the order in which (perhaps) they should be read.

The fourteen books [...] offer a kind of history of the future, which is, perhaps, not completely consistent, since I did not plan consistency to
begin with. The chronological order of the books in terms of future history (and not of publication date) is as follows:
    The Complete Robot [ROBOTS]
    The Caves of Steel [ROBOTS]
    The Naked Sun [ROBOTS]
    The Robots of Dawn [ROBOTS]
    Robots and Empire [ROBOTS]
    The Currents of Space [EMPIRE]
    The Stars, Like Dust-- [EMPIRE]
    Pebble in the Sky [EMPIRE]
    Prelude to Foundation [FOUNDATION]
    * Forward the Foundation [FOUNDATION]
    Foundation [FOUNDATION]
    Foundation and Empire [FOUNDATION]
    Second Foundation [FOUNDATION]
    Foundation's Edge [FOUNDATION]
    Foundation and Earth [FOUNDATION]
'Forward the Foundation', Asimov's second prequel to the original
Foundation trilogy, is not included in this list for the very good reason
that it was not yet written. It would sit between books 9 and 10 in this
    list.

    Internal story chronological order

Subsequent to Asimov suggesting his "kind of guide to the series" in
'Prelude to Foundation', he wrote a further prequel: 'Forward the
Foundation'. This books is not included in his guide, for obvious reasons.

It is also worth noting that the story 'Mirror Image', which appears in
'The Complete Robot', is set after 'The Naked Sun' - but Asimov's guide
would have readers reading 'Mirror Image' before 'The Naked Sun'.

The following order amends Asimov's guide, to allow for these two stories.

This list is based on the order in which the story happens: from the early
days of robotics on Earth, through the Spacer period, on to the Galactic Empire, then the decay and collapse of the Empire, accompanied by the rise
    of the Foundation.

I, Robot / The Complete Robot (except 'Mirror Image'!) [ROBOTS]
    The Caves of Steel [ROBOTS]
    The Naked Sun [ROBOTS]
    Mirror Image (short story) [ROBOTS]
    The Robots of Dawn [ROBOTS]
    Robots and Empire [ROBOTS]
    The Stars, Like Dust-- [EMPIRE]
    The Currents of Space [EMPIRE]
    Pebble in the Sky [EMPIRE]
    Prelude to Foundation [FOUNDATION]
    Forward the Foundation [FOUNDATION]
    Foundation [FOUNDATION]
    Foundation and Empire [FOUNDATION]
    Second Foundation [FOUNDATION]
    Foundation's Edge [FOUNDATION]
    Foundation and Earth [FOUNDATION]
    /u/Algernon_Asimov's developmental order

This order is based partly on the internal chronological order of the
stories, and partly on the order the stories were written. This order gives
a better sense of the development of the story and Asimov's direction than simply following the internal chronology or the order of publication. It demonstrates the development of the narrative over time and of Asimov's
    writing style through the decades.

Further to this, there are events referred to in the two prequels
('Prelude' and 'Forward') which assume you've already read the sequels
('Edge' and 'Earth') - because the prequels were written and published
after the sequels. Therefore, things which are supposed to come as
surprises while reading the sequels are already spoiled in the prequels.

This order puts 'Forward the Foundation' last, very deliberately - despite
it being a prequel. This was the last novel that Asimov ever wrote, and he "ended" the Foundation series by taking it back to its beginning, which is
a nice touch. The final scene in this book is a very appropriate way to
    finish the series.

As a side note: the Empire books are not among Asimov's best works, and
they share no connection with each other or with any other books on this
list. These are very optional reading, and not required at all. They are
only included here for completeness. They can be skipped.

    I, Robot [ROBOTS]
    Mother Earth (short story) [SPACERS]
    The Caves of Steel [SPACERS/ROBOTS]

The first four Foundation books follow on naturally from each other and
don't rely on the Robot stories for their plots to work. At the end of 'Foundation's Edge', there is a conversation where Asimov first brought in
the other worlds into his most famous saga. It is a confused mix of 'The
End of Eternity' and the Robot stories.

Like in the Star Wars Machete order, we now take an extended flashback explaining what happened. 'The End Of Eternity' is too set in the far
future, but a different one, and the reader will gradually work out what is going on and at the end will realise how it links to the other stories.

With the essential backstory now told, we go back to the very conversation
we left, in 'Foundation and Earth', where the story continues. Technically
we could read the three Empire novels in-between, but they are not
essential for the story and worse, are not that good.

In telling the story of a young

that tuned into Bosch and Bosch: Legacy over the years.
We're excited to embark on this journey."

A premiere date for Bosch: Start of Watch has not yet
    been announced.

Get a library card. All the books you want to read for free.

Actually, I have a library card. But the library isn't terribly
conveniently located for me. These days, I mostly find my books "on
    the gray" ;-)

I don't know if it's available in Canada but our libraries have ebook
services - hoopla, and Libby. Not only can you check out books from
your own library, but also from others. Yes you have to use an
ereader, but you get used to it and you don't have to leave your
living room to check out books. Look up your library's website and
see if they offer something like this.

We have Hoopla; I've never heard of Libby but it may be at our library
    too.

I had looked at Hoopla to watch videos but found it was too
restrictive; you can only watch 5 videos a month and I wanted to binge
    watch a show.

I haven't looked at the rules with respect to books but if they're not
too onerous, I would consider using Hoopla. Thanks for the suggestion.

When hoopla was first avaialble, I think it was restricted to 7 per
month, now it's gone up to 10. See if the library has Overdrive, it's similar to Libby. You can watch on any tablet, just need to get the
Kindle app read it there, Hoopla has its own reader. You might also see
if they have Kanopy which is another video app.

    Thanks for the suggestions!

Just FYI, https://www.bookseriesinorder.com is a great
resource for books-by-auther and often includes the
date/title of the next due out in a series.

It doesn't cover all authors, but most of the
mystery/thriller genre names are in there as well as
many of the cozy mystery authors.

Thanks, that could be handy, especially for getting into
book series. For instance, I'm just rereading the
original Foundation Trilogy and am toying with the idea
of reading the prequels and sequels but I'm not sure of
the proper order to read them. I don't imagine they count
as mysteries or thrillers though so I'm probably going to
be out of luck for that series ;-) But that website
should be handy for things like Connelly's books.

It does have some scifi series on there too, and there's
other book series sites who would have them.

I'm a big fan of Bosch so I'll certainly have a look at
this when it eventually gets released.

But in the
book series, I'm not sure she's been written in as one.

For instance, I'm just rereading the original Foundation Trilogy and am
toying with the idea of reading the prequels and sequels but I'm not
sure of the proper order to read them.

    Publication order

This is the order in which these books were published. This is the order in >> which readers were originally able to read these stories and shows the
development of Asimov's writing, and this series, over time.

    Pebble in the Sky [EMPIRE]
    I, Robot [ROBOTS]
    The Stars, Like Dust-- [EMPIRE]
    Foundation [FOUNDATION]
    Foundation and Empire [FOUNDATION]
    The Currents of Space [EMPIRE]
    Second Foundation [FOUNDATION]
    The Caves of Steel [ROBOTS]

    The Complete Robot [ROBOTS]
    Foundation's Edge [FOUNDATION]
    The Robots of Dawn [ROBOTS]
    Robots and Empire [ROBOTS]
    Foundation and Earth [FOUNDATION]
    Prelude to Foundation [FOUNDATION]
    Forward the Foundation [FOUNDATION]

Isaac Asimov's "kind of guide to the series"

In the Author's Note for 'Prelude to Foundation', Isaac Asimov wrote:

When I wrote Foundation, which appeared in the May 1942 issue of Astounding >> Science Fiction, I had no idea that I had begun a series of stories that
would eventually grow into six volumes and a total of 650,000 words (so
far). Nor did I have any idea that it would be unified with my series of
short stories and novels involving robots and my novels involving the
Galactic Empire for a grand total (so far) of fourteen volumes and a total >> of about 1,450,000 words.
In the 1980s, Asimov wrote two sequels to the original Foundation trilogy: >> 'Foundation's Edge' and 'Foundation and Earth'.
    Note:

[...] the situation has become sufficiently complicated for me to feel that >> the readers might welcome a kind of guide to the series, since they were
not written in the order in which (perhaps) they should be read.

The fourteen books [...] offer a kind of history of the future, which is,
perhaps, not completely consistent, since I did not plan consistency to
begin with. The chronological order of the books in terms of future history >> (and not of publication date) is as follows:
    The Complete Robot [ROBOTS]
    The Caves of Steel [ROBOTS]
    The Naked Sun [ROBOTS]
    The Robots of Dawn [ROBOTS]
    Robots and Empire [ROBOTS]
    The Currents of Space [EMPIRE]
    The Stars, Like Dust-- [EMPIRE]
    Pebble in the Sky [EMPIRE]
    Prelude to Foundation [FOUNDATION]
    * Forward the Foundation [FOUNDATION]

This list is based on the order in which the story happens: from the early >> days of robotics on Earth, through the Spacer period, on to the Galactic
Empire, then the decay and collapse of the Empire, accompanied by the rise >> of the Foundation.

I, Robot / The Complete Robot (except 'Mirror Image'!) [ROBOTS]
    The Caves of Steel [ROBOTS]
    The Naked Sun [ROBOTS]
    Mirror Image (short story) [ROBOTS]
    The Robots of Dawn [ROBOTS]
    Robots and Empire [ROBOTS]
    The Stars, Like Dust-- [EMPIRE]
    The Currents of Space [EMPIRE]
    Pebble in the Sky [EMPIRE]
    Prelude to Foundation [FOUNDATION]
    Forward the Foundation [FOUNDATION]
    Foundation [FOUNDATION]
    Foundation and Empire [FOUNDATION]
    Second Foundation [FOUNDATION]
    Foundation's Edge [FOUNDATION]
    Foundation and Earth [FOUNDATION]
    /u/Algernon_Asimov's developmental order

This order is based partly on the internal chronological order of the
stories, and partly on the order the stories were written. This order gives >> a better sense of the development of the story and Asimov's direction than >> simply following the internal chronology or the order of publication. It
demonstrates the development of the narrative over time and of Asimov's
    writing style through the decades.

This order puts 'Forward the Foundation' last, very deliberately - despite >> it being a prequel. This was the last novel that Asimov ever wrote, and he >> "ended" the Foundation series by taking it back to its beginning, which is >> a nice touch. The final scene in this book is a very appropriate way to
    finish the series.

As a side note: the Empire books are not among Asimov's best works, and
they share no connection with each other or with any other books on this
list. These are very optional reading, and not required at all. They are
only included here for completeness. They can be skipped.

    I, Robot [ROBOTS]
    Mother Earth (short story) [SPACERS]
    The Caves of Steel [SPACERS/ROBOTS]
    The Naked Sun [SPACERS/ROBOTS]

The first four Foundation books follow on naturally from each other and
don't rely on the Robot stories for their plots to work. At the end of
'Foundation's Edge', there is a conversation where Asimov first brought in >> the other worlds into his most famous saga. It is a confused mix of 'The
End of Eternity' and the Robot stories.

Like in the Star Wars Machete order, we now take an extended flashback
explaining what happened. 'The End Of Eternity' is too set in the far
future, but a different one, and the reader will gradually work out what is >> going on and at the end will realise how it links to the other stories.

With the essential backstory now told, we go back to the very conversation >> we left, in 'Foundation and Earth', where the story continues. Technically >> we could read the three Empire novels in-between, but they are not
essential for the story and worse, are not that good.

Ay caramba! This initially looked like it was exactly what I was looking
for but now that I've reached the end, I'm more confused than ever. It
seems like none of these lists are going to be completely satisfying and
any order I read them will contain spoilers. Oh well, it's not the end
    of the world.

Thanks for digging this up, anim!

Sure thing. When I saw what I messed it was turning into I decided to just include everything.

Yes, and who is going to come to my home to enforce any such
agreement? If I have the book on a Kindle then Amazon can and has
revoked access to books before. If the book resides on my computer
    it's beyond Amazon's reach.

This has even been tried with physical books. Two or three years ago, I remember reading about how a bookstore had accidentally put some best-selling author's book out on the shelves a week early and when they realized the mistake and the penalties they'd be facing from the publisher, they got on the phones and called up everyone who had bought the book and demanded they bring it back and return it. Suffice to say that didn't go over well.

If you've got Calibre installed or have an ereader,
you might want to check out these URLs.

I have Calibre so that should be handy for me.

    Ditto. Thanks, Nyssa.

    Calibre rules.

When I tried it years ago, Calibre was useless and
didn't work at all. I use Epubor Ultimate instead when
I occasionally need to convert ebook formats.

I don't know what you did, but I've used the program for
years with more books than I can count. That's not true
as I can go see the # of books I have available at the
moment but it's a tremendous amount. I've had them in
various formats and converted them to my desired format
using the program. The only thing that hasn't worked
well for me was some PDF file that included shots of the
pages of the book, but then nothing else made them
easily readable so that's likely not an issue with
calibre but whomever made the original capture.

*I* own and control my books.

Well, you think you do. :-)

ebooks, like all software (including DVDs and CDs),
have a licensing agreement you agree to when purchasing
/ downloading it. Even physical printed books have a
licensing agreement you agee to when purchasing the
    book.

Yes, and who is going to come to my home to enforce any
such agreement? If I have the book on a Kindle then
Amazon can and has revoked access to books before. If
the book resides on my computer it's beyond Amazon's
    reach.

And Amazon seems to think that *all* books on your Kindle
or Fire tablet were purchased/aquired from them even when
    they weren't.

So I sideload the books onto the ereader-only Kindles
(which are 3G anyway) and never connect to Amazon when
using the Fire's Kindle app. Potential problem solved.

Nyssa, who loves Calibre for making sideloading the books
onto the Kindles in the correct format much easier

You guys seems to know about eBooks. I have a nice Kobo
reader, but I can't use it. It gets DRM problems all the
time. I tried Calibre and it didn't do better. I use Adobe
Digital Edition. What do you suggest to eliminate the DRM
    problems?

There's a plug-in available for Calibre that eliminates
the DRM on some ebooks. Try doing a search for it.

I've used it on Kindle, but never had a Kobo, so I don't
know how well it would work, but since the plug-in is free,
it's worth a try. You'll need a device "key" from your
Kobo device to enter into the plug-in once you have it
    installed in Calibre.

I remember reading that only about one-third of ebooks
actually have DRM embedded. Several publishers have
advertised that they won't use DRM (Baen is one of them
IIRC). Other big-name publishers do use them unless the
author specifies in their contract not to use it on
    their books. YMMV.

    Good luck!

    ebooks

Did you have the relevant Calibre plugins installed?
Where did you buy the book(s) from?

    Heu...

I've never heard of this, and a quick search for "heu

    Heu-Heu. Got a link?
