To be fair, it died before. Maybe it needs to go away for a few years so that someone who actually loves it can revive it again.

There's far too much ridiculous baggage to deal with now due to
Doctoress Who, Black-gay Who, the Mistress, bi-regeneration, etc. for
it to ever be done properly again. :-(

For me it's definitely all the idiotic changes that simply make the
"new version" a very different show, so why did they bother re-using
the same title? They may as well just have made a completely new show
to begin with (e.g. "Warship Gigantica") and say it is very loosely
    based on the original.

Almost always these silly remakes / reboots / reimaginings are done by
some new egotistical fool who thinks they know better then the person
with the talent to come up with the original, as to how it "should have
    been done".

There's usually some nonsense excuse that re-using the same name means
they have a "built-in audience", but that's utter rubbish - the changes
mean the original fans won't like it, and people who didn't like the
original are unlikely to watch something with the same name.

Even resurrected shows (including prequels, sequels, and spin-offs)
with mostly the same cast and crew rarely work because everyone has
changed and time has moved on, so it's never really the same "magic" as
it was the first time around.

It's going to be run by a mix of people from both the original movie
and the tv show; Devlin&Emmerich have previously made known their
dislike of the changes made for TV, so we could be in for bit of
infighting (which never works out well).

Yep. Especially since at one stage there were at least three competing projects inu development - a new TV show, a movie based on teh TV show,
and a new movie that completely ignored the TV show. :-\

Similarly there were also three competing "Battlestar Galactica"
projects - one a sequel to the Glen Larson original TV series, one a
sequel to the Moore-Ron TV show, and one that somehow was meant to
    combine the two TV shows.

Hmmm!! (As this IS a 'Doctor who' newsgroup I'm reading this in ....)
I'm thinking you were thinking about Chris Chibnall there, Your Name!!

Not necessarily. There are many franchises that have been ruined by
silly reboots, remakes, and reimaginings, many long before Chibnall
    (aka Chib-nail-in-the-coffin) joined Doctor Who.

Earlier examples include the idiotic "Team Knight Rider" and the awful
"Knight Rider 2000" movie. Plus of course the ridiculous Americanised
"Doctor Who" movie with Paul McGann.

It isn't just TV / movies either. The comic book industry has ruined
many of its own franchises with silly changes too.

There's usually some nonsense excuse that re-using the same name means

I'm glad its dead, much better than seeing it violated time and time again.

They destroyed in 5 years what had endured for 60. Three generations
shared this passion, and were told we were never the audience to begin
    with.

To be fair, it died before. Maybe it needs to go away for a few years
so that someone who actually loves it can revive it again.

When doctor who was cancelled in the 80s there was still interest in it.
That is not true now. There is no interest in it now.

There is interest, just not in all the Politically Correct garbage that
RTD keeps shovelling out. It needs a new showrunner with some common
sense who can somehow ditch everything since the silly Missy showed up
(at least, maybe even further back).

It also needs a lead actor who actually wants to play the main role,
rather than just quit after five seconds because they now have a 'big'
    name show on the CV.
