Netflix recently released a new series called The Beast in Me which has
some pretty big names either starring in it or serving as executive
producers. Among the latter are Howard Gordon, associated with several previous high-quality dramas like Homeland, as well as Jodie Foster and
Conan O'Brian. The stars include Claire Danes, who previously starred in Homeland and Matthew Rhys, who many will remember as the male lead of
The Americans. Jonathon Banks, who played Mike Ehrmentraut in Breaking
Bad, Brittany Snow, who I remember from American Dreams many years ago,
and Tim Guinee all have important roles in the story as well.
Our two leads are playing Agatha Wiggs, a writer who has been devastated
by the loss of her young son at the hands of a drunk driver several
years before. It has ended her marriage to a visual artist named Shelley
and kept her from writing as well, leading to difficulties with her
publisher. A new neighbour approaches her about getting her permission
to construct a jogging track through the neighbouring woods. He turns
out to be the notorious Nile Jarvis, whose wife disappeared under
mysterious circumstances a few years before. The police were unable to
prove his involvement in her disappearance but almost everyone continues
to believe he was behind it. He is a powerful property developer in NYC
as is his father.
Despite Aggie's initial reluctance to have any involvement with Jarvis,
she finds herself driven to get closer to him when the young man she
blames for her son's death disappears within hours of her admitting her
hatred of him to Jarvis. She thinks Jarvis has done him in to curry
favour with her. She hatches a plan to get closer to him by writing a
book about him.
That's as much as I'm going to say here; anything else would be too spoilerish. There are eight one-hour episodes and I've watched all of
them. It is an entirely self-contained story so don't expect this to be dragged out for umpteen seasons.
IMDB rates it 7.5; I think it deserves better.
