    I'm surprised that they missed Fonzie (Henry Winkler) in Happy Days.
    That one seems particularly obvious to me as an example of a minor
    character that became THE central character.

    I don't consider Sheldon Cooper and JR Ewing to be side characters. They
    were the focus of the show from the beginning.

    Yep, a sort-of-talking dog called "Mr. Cool". They also weirdly added
    an alien space pilot from the 25th century named "Cupcake". :-\
