$1.3 million in tax money used to buy a paving machine for the roads, then, despite the roads desperately needing its services, it's left to sit idle and unused so long that a vagrant (with an ankle monitor) now uses it as his
    home.

So pretty much business as usual in L.A.

It's not unusual to hear that reserves for the indigenous people in
Ontario have issues with water quality, particularly those that are in
remote areas near mining operations. One such reserve demanded that
something be done about the problem. The bureaucracy assessed the
problem and reckoned that building a pipeline to good water would be
very expensive so they bought the residents a brand new water tanker at
no cost to them and delivered it to the nearest car dealership. All they
had to do was pick up the tanker, then send somebody to the good water
source, fill up the tanker, then drive back to the reserve to share out
the good water. A year after the tanker had been delivered, it had yet
to be picked up from the dealership.

I have no idea what a new water tanker costs so it may well be cheaper
than a paving machine but it seems like a similar tale of government
    waste....
