Yeah, it may be possible that cable (VOD) will give you some of those
flicks in 4k. (I doubt I would get them 4k from Spectrum, so that may be >>>> a Comcast only thing...)

Hmm, just brought up Dune on the web browser (AT&T) and it definitely
lists 4K as being provided. I don't have a 4K monitor set up so I
couldn't verify if it was being provided or not.

But on the app, you have to pay extra for 4k - it doesn't come as part >>>> of the package that those of us who are getting the app via our cable
    packages are getting.

Thought I would add this. Using the web browser on HBO Max I see
Planet Earth Season 1 Episode 1 is in 4K UHD according to the listing.
So it appears that you can get 4K UHD from the site using a web
browser. At least through my free account provided because I have AT&T
    Internet service.

Do yu subscribe to HBO or not? Ian's complaing is that without an HBO subscription, there is a surcharge for 4k.

No, that's not what I am saying - what I am saying is an HBO cable subscription is NOT enough to get you 4k as part of the HBO Max app!

If you want 4k, you have to pay extra.

Basically, if you are a cable subscriber who wants 4k, I think your only option is to unsubscribe from getting HBO from cable, and subscribe
directly through the HBO Max app for their top "premium" plan.

Needless to say, I am not willing to do that.

What HBO Max flicks "with 4k" used to say was basically a disclaimer - something like "4k viewing available based on plan". I dunno if it still
says that, but if it does, you might have read that as "I get 4k!" when
what it really means is "This is not 4k unless you've got the top
    premium plan!!"

But I guess it's possible that your Comcast box HBO Max app is giving

I'm talking about choosing a movie, then looking at the combined index
the settop box uses. I get a list called "free to me". I am then
offered an option to watch the movie in 4k from the HBO Max app. I can
also choose Networks first, then HBO Max, then the movie. But I can
still get to the combined index which shows all free and paid viewing
options, and upcoming listings in the channel guide if it's available on satellite too.

But I guess it's possible that your Comcast box HBO Max app is giving

Stupid question: what's the different in cost between the two and are
there any non-financial issues at stake here?

For the "base" plans, I think they're probably around $17 and $22 a
    month now(?).

As a cable subscriber, I get the ad-free but non-4k tier for "free" (as
part of my cable package). AFAIK, there is no way for me to pay $5/month
extra to just get the 4k tier - I think I would have to cancel my HBO
cable package, and subscribe directly to HBO Max for the ~$22/month plan
    to get the 4k tier.

Makes sense - I "unplugged' my cable TV service 4 years ago after my
wife's passing. We have/had 3 people in the house - wife, daughter and
me and she was the only one that ever watched TV regularly (as opposed
to me watching TONS of Youtube videos and downloaded material). So
since we were in a multi-year plan and the cable provider understood
ours was an unusual situation they canned the TV service but increased
    our Internet speed.

(I still watch a lot of individual shows but don't channel surf)
