Winderbaum acknowledged Spider-Man's standing but firmly placed
Batman above the web-slinger in his personal ranking. He stated,
"He's the goat. Spider-Man is a close second." The executive
highlighted that both characters share impressive villain rosters
as a common strength.
Winderbaum pointed to Batman's humanity as a key factor in his
preference for the Dark Knight. He explained, "Batman is a human
being, so has like the aspirational edge a little bit." The Marvel
executive emphasized that Batman's lack of superpowers gives the
character a unique appeal.
The executive also revealed specific storytelling elements that draw
him to Batman over other superheroes. He said, "My favorite Batman
stories are the ones where the villain takes center stage."
Winderbaum described Batman as "the existential threat to their
journey," calling it "a cool story mechanic."
Winderbaum also expressed his enthusiasm for DC's current Absolute
Batman comic series during the podcast discussion. He shared, "I just
read the first six issues on the play. It was so good." The executive
praised the comic's approach of "reframing him as kind of a
working-class hero, making the bad guy, the billionaire." Winderbaum
called the series' take on Alfred "so great" and "so interesting."
The Marvel television head's willingness to champion a rival
company's character surprised the podcast hosts during the segment.
