Sam Neill, one of Hollywood's most beloved actors, has died at 78.
His family announced that he passed away in Sydney, Australia. The
news was shared through Neill's official Instagram account on
Monday. Best known for bringing Dr. Alan Grant to life in the
Jurassic Park franchise, the New Zealand actor leaves behind a
career that spanned five decades and earned love across film and
TV.
Hollywood legend Sam Neill dies in Australia
The statement from Neill's family said he died on Monday, July 13,
in Sydney, Australia. According to the Instagram post, he was
"surrounded by family" and passed away "with the dignity that has
characterised his whole life."
The family described the loss as sudden and unexpected, while noting
that Neill had remained cancer-free. They also thanked the staff at
St Vincent's Private Hospital for their care and asked for privacy
as they grieve.
"It is with immense sadness that the whanau* of Sam Neill
share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July, in
Sydney Australia. Sam was surrounded by family and
passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole
life.
The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the
fact that Sam remained cancer free. They would like to
express their deepest gratitude to the staff at
St Vincent's Private Hospital for their incredible care.

privacy as they navigate this immeasurable loss."

Neill began building his screen career in the 1970s before becoming
an international star. He earned early acclaim with films such as
My Brilliant Career and Possession, but global audiences came to
know him as paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg's
Jurassic Park (1993).
He later reprised the role in Jurassic Park III and Jurassic World
Dominion. Neill was also featured in well-known titles like,
The Hunt for Red October, The Piano, Event Horizon, The Horse
Whisperer. ?Neill credits also include Peaky Blinders, where he
portrayed Chief Inspector Chester Campbell.
Over the years, Neill built a reputation as an actor who could fit
into almost any kind of role. That versatility earned him plenty of
recognition, including several AACTA Awards and New Zealand Film
and Television Awards. In 2022, New Zealand honored him with a
Knighthood, naming him a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order
of Merit for his outstanding contribution to the world of acting.
Away from the camera, Neill was also known for his vineyard in
New Zealand and his warm, self-deprecating personality. He is
survived by his children, Tim Neill and Elena Neill.
