    I also haven't been watching the show. I heard about the puppet episode
    and also the black and white "Casablanca" episode. Is it just that the
    writers want to do holodeck episodes but can't because the holodeck
    doesn't exist yet, so they have to come up with stupid gimmicks to work
    around the lack of holodeck (rather than simply not doing stupid
    holodeck type episodes)?

    Not having a holodeck didn't stop the original show - they simply
    visited cowboy planet, gangster planet, Greek Gods planet, etc. :-)
