• Race to the Bottom: California Bill to Legalize Retail Theft

From BTR1701@3:633/10 to All on Tue Aug 18 20:27:05 2026
AB 2018 will allow thieves and vandals to escape all consequences for their crimes, even if the cops bother to investigate and make an arrest.

Apparently people are robbing sneaker stores and stealing PlayStations because these things are necessities. Plus, it's Trump's fault, naturally.

    Appalling.

Was Prop. 36 a constitutional amendment or legislation by referendum?

    The latter.

I also just heard that L.A. City government has cited a volunteer group that goes out and cleans the city streets parks of trash and drug needles and all the filth that the city lets the vagrants throw all over the place, because
the volunteer group isn?t certified to handle medical waste. The city hands
out needles for the zombies to use to inject their drugs, then refuses to
clean up what they leave behind in the parks, the sidewalks, and the beaches, then fines any citizens who try to do it themselves. It makes you want to beat your head on the nearest concrete wall.

    Progress!

More gaslighting! These mobs of people walk into stores and steal
thousands of dollars worth of items that are most definitely NOT
necessities by any reasonable definition of the term, then turn around
and sell them to fences in exchange for money to buy things they WANT especially drugs. For liability reasons, the stores just let them do
that, terrified that someone might get hurt and then the store would be
    sued for millions.

I've said it before, I'll say it again: the stores need to lock their
doors to everyone but staff and open drivethru windows like the fast
food places. Customers would come up to the window, tell the person at
the window what they want, pay for the item, and then the staff go grab
the item and bring it back to the window and hand it over. Theft would
    drop to zero.

Obviously, there would need to be some refinements for some items; this
is just a rough outline of what could solve the problem.

I also just heard that L.A. City government has cited a volunteer group that goes out and cleans the city streets parks of trash and drug needles and all the filth that the city lets the vagrants throw all over the place, because the volunteer group isn?t certified to handle medical waste.

I can think of two reasons for that, both of which might apply:

    1. The City is worried about liability if one of the volunteers gets
sick from something they pick up. I've heard LA is actually seeing cases
of plague or leprosy or other such things.
    2. Their friends in the unions insist on volunteers NOT taking away
their opportunities to make some sweet money cleaning up.

I'll bet that second one sounds ludicrous but I remember reading an
article 20-odd years back where a group of parent volunteers at a school
in BC had organized a large number of popular and well-organized
activities for the kids at the school. The teachers freaked out because
their union insisted that only THEY could supervise kids on school
grounds. The school board backed the union and the activities were
promptly cancelled because there was no money to pay the teachers the
overtime they wanted to supervise the activities!

    The city hands
out needles for the zombies to use to inject their drugs, then refuses to clean up what they leave behind in the parks, the sidewalks, and the beaches, then fines any citizens who try to do it themselves. It makes you want to beat
your head on the nearest concrete wall.
