• [NEWS] Disney and Netflix makes content licensing deal

From Your Name@3:633/10 to All on Sat Oct 3 14:11:56 2026

Maybe the idiots running the streaming services are finally beginning
to realise that they need to share, rather than stupidly having
'exclusive' content ... although this "deal" seems to be just one-sided
(no Netflix content on Disney+ / Hulu, yet).

    Disney Strikes Shocking Streaming Deal
as Percy Jackson, Pixar Movies, & More Head to Netflix
    ------------------------------------------------------
Disney Entertainment and Netflix have reached a new content
licensing agreement that will bring several Disney television
series and movies to Netflix. The deal includes Disney+
originals, ABC shows, and films from Pixar and 20th Century
    Studios.

According to Variety, the agreement is nonexclusive and will
give Netflix access to a selection of Disney-owned
programming. The first major release is Percy Jackson and the
Olympians, with its first two seasons arriving globally on
    Netflix on October 4.

The Netflix availability is scheduled for three months. Within
that window, viewers can now watch the first two seasons
before the third season premieres on Disney+ on November 20.

The agreement also includes ABC's Will Trent. Seasons 1
through 4 of the procedural drama will arrive globally on
Netflix on November 3. Other library series included in the
arrangement are Felicity, Revenge, Army Wives, and Fresh Off
the Boat, although availability can vary by region.

What other Disney movies are now headed to Netflix under the
    new deal?
The movie portion of the agreement includes titles from
20th Century Studios, Walt Disney Animation Studios, and Pixar.
All five original theatrical Ice Age movies will begin
streaming globally on Netflix on October 4. The timing comes
ahead of the franchise's next theatrical installment, Ice Age:
Boiling Point, which is scheduled to open in theaters in
February 2027. The Netflix release gives audiences access to
the earlier films before the new chapter arrives.

Additional Disney and Pixar movies will join Netflix in early
2027. The confirmed titles include Pixar's Soul, Walt Disney
Animation Studios' Raya and the Last Dragon, and the
science-fiction film Elio. The agreement does not remove these
titles from Disney's own streaming services. Licensed movies
and series will continue to be available on Disney+ and Hulu
    while also appearing on Netflix.

For Netflix, the arrangement will bring recognizable franchises
and established series. As for Disney, the new setup will add a
distribution outlet while keeping titles on its own services.?

The titles will be released on different dates rather than as
    one single catalog drop globally.

I've already seen some Disney+ shows on there.

There are so many streaming services now that only a rich person
could subscribe even to all of the major ones. It'll be good if
    they start sharing content more.

Even if I don't know how, I feel certain that every such shift has been calculated as putting more of *my* money into *their* pockets...

I'm sure that's the hope. Still, I get to see WandaVision, and I
couldn't if they didn't trade shows.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if, for example, seasons 1 and 2 of a
Disney show are on Netflix, but if you want to watch seasons 3 and 4
you have to instead subscribe to Disney+.

It will certainly be the case for those who just *have* to watch a new
season immediately it is released rather than wait a for months.

This is (seemingly) already how it works on Prime Video. While my
brother is a Prime member, either I (or he as well) have some sort of Frankenstein hybrid subscription to Prime Video - so I can watch the
first season of some Amazon Prime Video TV shows (I want to say in the
case of "Reacher" it was only the pilot) for "free" (or as part of the subscription), but if I want to watch the most recent season or two of
these shows, I would have to pay extra.

But that's on the one service, whereas the Disney / Netflix sharing is
    on two separate services. :-)

Sky TV here in New Zealand sometimes runs deals where subscribers can
get free access to the optional extra channels for a couple of weeks or
the movie channels for a month. It's a "taster" and they hope users
will then pay to subscribe to those extra channels. The movie channels
is good and we record on the Sky set-top box any we want to see and
then watch them whenever we get around to it. For the other channels
it's a bit pointless - a couple of weeks means you're only able to
watch a few episdoes before being locked out again.
