I've been rewatching Babylon 5 on Youtube. Episodes are uploaded one at
a time every few days.
I have to say I enjoyed Season 1 more than I remembered. With context,
Sinclair was really interesting.
The Talia Winters stuff... every episode in which she's featured is a
variation on a theme. There was too little for the character to do. If
the plot still belonged to Laurel Takashima from the pilot, I can't help
but thinking there would have been more variety.
This second season episode has a Robocop/Philip K. Dick theme about
cybernetic implants into a corpse, then reviving him, together with a personality implant.
Plus a Psycho theme. Big guest star James Shigeta gets murdered early
like Janet Leigh.
The episode could have been better but the writing was sloppy. That the assasination was witnessed made no sense since the witness would confirm
the obvious false flag, then with the witness herself killed later,
there's just no way the lie will hold. Garibaldi surrounds Talia with
security, then fails to notice that the wanted man is in the room she
enters because he fails to clear it. Ridiculous. Sheridan coincidentally
knows about the sooper-secret project.
Years later, JMS insisted that the implanted personality clues for
Laurel, then Talia, were in plain sight. I'm still not seeing it. While
the audience knows Talia lied to the captain, recognizing the psy cop in
the assasin's mind, we're sympathetic, perhaps guessing she's her mentor
given the back story she told Garibaldi.
I always thought the Talia episodes were a let down.
Zack Allen was introduced.
