Best part is hospital established newborn as new patient with separate billing account from mother. I'm a little confused about how baby
entered into that contract.

$95,000 to deliver a baby with no complications or emergencies? That's obscene to my way of thinking. I get that there is going to be a cost
for operating a hospital, paying skilled staff and expensive equipment
but that just seems way WAY too much of a cost.

The first three grand is for the birth. The other $92,000 is you paying the bills for the dozens of illegals sitting in the ER getting free healthcare.

I stroked out six months ago in a care facility I was in for something
else. It cost me $1000 (my share, after Insurance) for the ambulance to
take me next-door to the hospital. I was in a tiny triangular room for
three days while they waited for the stroke recovery hospital to open up. Just got the bill. Over $100,000.

I declined an ambulance ride to the ER after I broke my arm last year. I
just drove myself one-handed because I knew that the ambulance would add thousands to the bill.
Even so after all the exams, X-rays, splints, and the surgery that
officially turned me into a cyborg (living tissue over a metal
endoskelton), the total cost was $87,000. And that doesn't even count the physical therapy afterward.

Did you have health insurance to cover most of that or was that all out-of-pocket expense? I'm guessing that you don't have ongoing
insurance from the USSS after your retirement. You haven't mentioned
another job beyond engraving so I'm guessing coming up with $87K from
your pension and whatever you make from engraving wasn't particularly easy....

I get federal health insurance for life. My compensation for being required to throw myself in front of a bullet for a politician.

Humana said the ambulance ride should?ve cost 200 bucks and they paid that much.
That was just three days of the in-between hospital and no tests or
anything. I have no idea how much I owe yet. Then I spent six weeks in the stroke recovery hospital. That?s where I got physical therapy. Mostly in my room because I tested positive for the flu and I wasn?t allowed to go
outside and they had to go up and come in and work me out in my room, and
it all looked like the Andromeda strain.

Hopefully the insurance will cover most of it. But that doesn?t include

An itemized bill stating a date and medical practitioner should be
easily verifiable by you: you'll know if you've ever seen Dr. X and
whether you had been in his office on such-and-such a day. I'm not sure
what happens for a hospital stay in the US. Does the hospital send you a single bill listing all the different doctors who treated you or does
each doctor bill you separately? I can imagine situations where a doctor treated you in hospital without you meeting them and not recognizing
their name but the hospital should be able to verify that Dr. X had
treated you and was accredited at the hospital.
I had a call once that claimed to be about inappropriate charges on my credit card. I smelled a rat right away and asked them to tell me my
credit card number. He told me the first 4 digits, a pattern that is
widely used across Canada, so I pointed that out and asked him for the
rest. The actual credit card company would know my credit card number
but he was a scammer so he didn't. He said he couldn't tell me "for
privacy reasons". That immediately confirmed my suspicion that he was a scammer. I actually called him a liar and then asked him what was next.
He had me go to a website that asked for my name, credit card number,
expiry date and the secret code. I'd seen warnings about that exact
scam: they have you enter all your information and then they drain your account. Naturally, I hung up without filling anything in.
Anytime someone calls with some story, figure out if they're legit by
asking them something they'd know if they were legit. If they can't (or won't) answer, you know they are bogus.

Their automated systems will leave voicemails, but they just say they have important information for me and they?ll call back later.

That reminds of this call that I would get every day for weeks on end.
It would always be the same guy opening up with "Shawn?" like he knows
me. Turns out he was trying to collect for some fire fighters charity.
At first I would just tell him no thanks, then it turned to 'please
remove me from your lift' to me refusing to pick up the phone.
Especially when they started calling at different hours, sometimes at
8AM or noon or 8PM. Luckily the call is marked as spam, most of the
time, but coming from many different numbers.
If you are forced to spoof your phone number because people don't want
to talk to you, perhaps you are doing something wrong.
