• BBC is about to downsize

From Rhino@3:633/10 to All on Tue Oct 20 11:42:32 2026
The BBC has announced that three of their various services will shut
down next spring in order to achieve some cost savings. They will close
BBC 3, BBC Scotland, and Radio 4 Extra. There are expected to be "redundancies" - Brit-speak for job losses - and assorted other cost
cutting measures across the board. Apparently half a million people have refused to pay the licence fee any more in the past year alone.

The legacy media continues to bleed out because people are turning away
    from them and their lies.

It's about time. They should have refused to pay it a century ago when Parliament first imposed it for the benefit of a private company.

This has nothing to do with nonneutral news reporting but heavy-handed
tactics collecting the fee, especially from people not subject to it.

That's not the impression I get from countless YouTube comments from
people who say they have stopped paying the license fee because of the
    BBC's clear leftist agenda.

The *comments* under this video are just one example:

    Why can't it be both?!

The BBC is not a private company. It is not government owed either.

The BBC is actually a not-for-profit public service broadcaster that is
owned by the British public. The BBC gets its money from the license
fee, various grants and donations, and by licensing TV shows to
overseas networks. In some cases, such as Doctor Who, they also get
money via partnership deals with other networks.

The annual TV license fee is 180 pounds, or $240, which works out to $20/month. Seems like a great deal to me.

And you get all the non-pay channels, such as ITV, Channel 4 and Channel
5, in addition to the BBC's offerings.

    https://www.bbc.com/aboutthebbc/governance/licencefee

    https://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/check-if-you-need-one/topics/what-does-your-tv-licence-cover

What these pages don't make clear, at least to me, when it comes to subscription services, is that the TV license only allows you to watch
their content; you still have to pay the subscription fee for a service.
