    She should consider using Holub's C compiler book. It's freely availa-
    ble from the author's website, has plenty of technical and other errors
    for the kids to find -- and a 55 page errata if I recall correctly --
    so at the end of the day, the kids not only know how to read English,
    they'll also know how to code a compiler in C.
