From poindexter FORTRAN@1:103/705 to All on Sat Aug 1 07:30:10 2026
I gotta say, after dealing with orphaned or semi-supported software for
most of the time I've run my BBS, seeing the amount of support and
development Synchronet has going on makes me happy.

I upgrade using sbbs_dev.zip/sbbs_run.zip, and watch the commit logs to
find a quiet time to upgrade - lately, there have been times that I keep pushing it out a day at a time as I see more commits that I'd want to capture...

    ... The three is online.

Generative AI has accelerated that development by... a lot. The number of long-standing software and systems problems its been able to help me solve over the past 6 months has astonished me. The next Synchronet release will be a big jump in quality (stability and scalability) from the last official release. Of course, you can use the current development build (v3.22a) any time and your feedback is appreciated.

Yeah, I'm happy I went with Synchronet for my current BBS. I like that Synchronet gets updates fairly often.

When I started running a BBS again in 2007, I initially had set up EleBBS, since EleBBS is basically a modern clone of RemoteAccess, which I used for my original BBS. It looks like EleBBS isn't in active development right now.

Mystic is fairly popular, but from what I've heard, Mystic is closed-source and it doesn't get regular updates. I think that's understandable though, as it's a hobby project and the author is probably taking time to do other things.

One good thing about using git is you can pull and compile whenever there's an update. Easier said than done for Windows users, but I'm sure there's nightly builds.

Sometimes it's hard to know when to do an update because there might be a bug found or a fix for a fix for a fix the next day.

Some sysops perfer to keep ahead with continuous development and others sit and wait for the next big release. I guess you fall in the middle.
