I do believe that is covered by the "Q+" part of LGBTQ+ Pride Month,
which is why he quasi-sarcastically brought it up.

There's so much acknowledgement nowadays. I miss the '80s, going to
school in San Francisco. There was Straight and Queer, and they each
sort of encompassed a whole group.

    Simpler times.

I joked about Hamburger Mary's, a wonderful bar and restaurant that was
a melting pot in South of Market in San Francisco - a block from 2
leather bars, close to the nascent tech boom in the 90s, and still home
to the locals. I'd always give props to a bar that made fancy drinks but
still had a PBR tap for the locals.

You'd see men in drag at the bar next to tech bros in dockers and button
down shirts and a group of college kids. Everyone just sort of got
    along. Killer music, too.

They had 2 single-stall bathrooms. They were originally marked MEN and
LADIES. That caused some confusion, so they changed the names to BUTCH
and FEMME. Later, they gave up and labeled them both WHOEVER - after
    all, they were identical!

It isn't, though. Are white people not allowed to be PROUD of who/what
they are, and what they've overcome/accomplished? Is that because
they're the majority demographic group and therefore are evil?

Straight whites are easily the most priviledged in the US, by far.

What does "priviledged" have to do with being proud of one's self?

Also, even that *word* is just a go-to talking point for the Left, as a passive-aggressive way of putting down white people for no actual
reason. I'm a straight white guy, and have worked HARD for everything
I've got. I got no special priviledges along the way.

Have you ever had any exposure/experience with white folks from the Appalachian region, or the deep south "bayou" region, or the dust-eaters
in west Texas? Would you call any of them priviledged by being white?
Those are HUGE numbers of people too, in case you didn't know. Probably
the poorest groups in the entire country, and nearly 100% white.

Do you understand that some people (not necessarily me, but MANY people) consider those kind of lifestyles immoral due to religious reasons? Are
they evil because they believe in God and not "Pride" weirdos? I
personally don't "celebrate" Pride because I find most of it rather disgusting, quite honestly, for non-religious reasons. However, I don't
do anything to cause any trouble about any of it, I just tend to ignore
it. Do what you'd like to do, but you don't need to tell me about it,

Everyone assumes that all white people have "white privilege," whatever that is.
I have heard in past that it might be linked to "generational wealth."

I am Gen X. I am the first generation of my immediate family who can say that I

One never had an automobile. Maybe white privilege just kicked in with my generation?

Still not sure where the "generational wealth" part of it comes in, unless that means having jobs and working.

Everyone assumes that all white people have "white privilege," whatever that is.

People hear the term, "privilege", and assume it means, "something extra special".

It doesn't, and it turns an extremely useful concept into something that people get hung up on, because, as you say, it doesn't feel a whole lot like privilege when you're poor.

But think about "rich privilege". The idea there would be that, since you're rich, a sudden $1000 expense is basically irrelevant, so you can use money to take care of the problem, and it not hurt.

And it's not _money_ with "white privilege", it's that you don't have to worry that the police are going to be extra interested in you because of skin color. The immigration people aren't going to see, "he looks like a Mexican", and ask you for papers.

And so on. Because being white is the default, there's a variety of things you don't have to worry about.

But _of course_ you still have worries, especially if you're poor. And we're all a lot closer to being homeless than we are to being billionaires. (Well, unless there's a secret billionaire keeping quiet about it)

Anyway, you may disagree with the concept, but I always hope that people can understand that "white privilege" isn't about _special_ rights, or being rich, or whatever, it's about the set of things you _don't_ see or notice, because you don't have to deal with it.

But it's a concept with a stupid name, so that things get confused, like when people talk about "theory" in scientific and non-scientific contexts.

It's not really semantics. It's accuracy vs sloppiness.

The month/topic in this discussion is *NOT* to celebrate the actual
Veteran. It's focused on appreciation for the "Military Family" in

When you can't get a job, your community exiles you, your government takes away right, etc. based on said activities, let us know.

Quite frankly, I could point out a lot of HR personal were trying to achieve just that against normal people because they keep views that were normal in 2014 and somehow are disregarded now.

Glad I see less of it as of late.

The problem I have with the idea is that for nearly a decade a number of sectors have been affected by "Progressive Privilege" and if you didn't follow the party line you would have to deal with a lot of crap. Crap you don't deal with if you follow the Party Line.

"Check your privilege" gets tiresome when you witness employment recruitment processes that pick based on ethnic quotas and, after you see a number of your demographic group not make the cut because HR preferred to pick members from a protected minority instead, then you still get told your group is privileged and to check your privilege and then eat shit and die. By the way, HP, I am looking at you and you have still not paid the price of all your outsourcings in full.

That is the whole point of being on the privilege bandwagon. It allows one to put on airs of higher intellect and general superiority. In some cases, I suspect it is also overcompensation for some suppressed 'phobias and 'isms that they themselves secretly harbor which cause them to forcefully project said 'phobias and 'isms onto others.

Hehe, actually the team I manage is a compliance team for the pharma industry...

The thing with DEI, is that intent doesn't matter so much as outcome. The issue is that it creates an incentive structure which necessitates a racial/sexual bias to remain complaint.

If you are going to be *judged* by your organisation not being "representative" according to some somewhat arbitrary criteria, or incorrect assumptions, then in order to avoid criticism, or not meeting a target, you'll need to ensure hiring and promotion brings you in line with expectation.

This is what people miss. Once you make something a "metric", then the system is gamed to make the metric appear good "on paper", regardless of how. Like how the government will just import people to make GDP look good, despite the fact that cost of living is going up, etc.

Its not so much the idea of "not discriminating" which is the problem, is the creation of metrics, which are directly correlated to the race/ethnicity/gender/sexuality of your staff.

Actually, one way companies increase their female management is to just create bogus "manager" jobs, i.e, rename someone working on their own as a "manager", and then this increases the female manager metric.

This should have been the obvious outcome from the start.

I agree fully with you here that it *can* create a incentive structure - but if it has, the company has implemented it wrong.

The same strucutre you cite already exists *without* DEI, but it's the polar opposite, resulting in racism, misogyny, etc. Hell, half the people here make it VERY clear they would not hire someone they deem as LGBTQ+. DEI combats that.

Is it perfect? Hell no. Is it better than the alternative (ie: nothing)? Hell yes. Instead of being "anti-DEI", be "anti-abuse". ALL of our systems are abused in some way or another -- that's the game. There is always persons out there ready to exploit/abuse/whatever any system in place. The key is to iterate and revise, not destroy.

I've seen this play out in a million ways over my career, but replace "female" with whatever you like. Bad people game the system to make themselves look good. Nothing new. (Bad) Managers do this with or without DEI.

...and lucky us, that's exactly what oversight & regulation does. And we DO have independent groups (plural, important here) that study this stuff, and the outcomes have been overly positive, with outlier bad effects.

I agree fully with you here that it *can* create a incentive structure - but if it has, the company has implemented it wrong.

The same strucutre you cite already exists *without* DEI, but it's the polar opposite, resulting in racism, misogyny, etc. Hell, half the
people here make it VERY clear they would not hire someone they deem as LGBTQ+. DEI combats that.

Is it perfect? Hell no. Is it better than the alternative (ie: nothing)? Hell yes. Instead of being "anti-DEI", be "anti-abuse". ALL of our
systems are abused in some way or another -- that's the game. There is always persons out there ready to exploit/abuse/whatever any system in place. The key is to iterate and revise, not destroy.

Actually, one way companies increase their female management is to jus
create bogus "manager" jobs, i.e, rename someone working on their own
a "manager", and then this increases the female manager metric.

I've seen this play out in a million ways over my career, but replace "female" with whatever you like. Bad people game the system to make themselves look good. Nothing new. (Bad) Managers do this with or
    without DEI.

There is no going back. Diverse societies become societies driven by identity politics.

The "merit driven" society is over, we are going to become and more and more defined by what group we identify by.

If multiple people are reporting the same thing, independently, in different places, that is, seeing the same issue come up and correlate, then "anectode" becomes "Evidence".

I'm just entertained that you effectively just said that the plural of anecdote is data, and the common saying is that the plural of anecdote is _not_ data.

Though multiple anecdotes are generally a good reason to do research.

Anyway, not responding to the rest of the political discussion, in the hopes of being slightly better on my own political responses.

The more you deversify, the less this is true. "Melting pots" have always shown this to be the case while nationalism and the like produces said groups.

    Happy Pride!

And please stop with the politics talk. I was hoping we were done with it.

So many other nice conversations going on, without any mention of politicians.

Nobody is diversifying anything that matters.

The whole diversity theory goes that if you build teams from people with different cultural backgrounds you get teams which produce more flexible ideas.

However you don't see HR picking up employees based on those concepts. They will happily pick 10 employees for the team who were raised in a given city, educated in the same facilities and following the same program, but they will call their group diverse because some employees have a different skin color despite the fact they are factually the same.

The way real diversity looks like is more in the line of outsourcing work to external specialists which bring something your company does not have. Which is far from popular IRL.

Sadly we are in a polarized society.

discuss focing values on others, I feel forced to respond kindly to
    "Thank you
for your service," to maintain societal norms when the truthful response would
be "I didn't do it for you."

I 100% understand and agree with this... but, you can just let them think whatever and say "You're welcome." and then just go about your day ;).
Yeah, it's not instinctive or even what you WANT to do...
