With digital media, it's easy to accumulate a massive collection. I've
gotten to the point where media is getting cumbersome, and managing
metadata is taking more and more time.

Listening to my music on shuffle, it seems my music is either something
I went through a trend listening to recently or music that's tied to
specific times in my life.

Rob, the main character in the novel/movie "High Fidelity", talks about
sorting his music in autobiographical order.

Dick: I guess it looks as if you're reorganizing your records. What is
this though? Chronological?
Rob: No...
Dick: Not alphabetical...
Rob: Nope...
Dick: What?
Rob: Autobiographical.
Dick: No fucking way.
Rob: Yep. Let me tell ya how I got from Deep Purple to Howlin' Wolf in just
25 moods. And, if I want to find the song "Landslide" by Fleetwood Mac,
I have to remember that I bought it for someone in the Fall of 1983 pile
- but, didn't give it to them for personal reasons.
Dick: That sounds...
Rob: Comforting.
Dick: Yes.
Rob: It is.

I thought about separating my media into music that I have an emotional attachment to and music that I've collected and like, but I don't have a connection to.

I think Rob was onto something. While I like Lush and Cocteau Twins, I
picked up Lush after hearing it in a coffee shop but Cocteau Twins
reminds me of my sophomore year in college, hanging out with a girl I
thought was amazingly cool, with an eclectic group of friends, and for
some reason that escapes me, she liked me back. Sitting up with them,
drinking cheap wine in a dorm room and listening to the Cocteau twins on
an import cassette. Imports always sounded better, but they were more
expensive and money was tight.

Maybe the convenience of media nowadays lessens the emotional
connection?

Two albums I bought in 1999 when I was in a real weird head space that messed me up were Scenes from
a Memory by Dream Theater and Brave by Marillion. Maybe when I officially realized I was not on team
straight.

Yes, import albums were a pain in the arse to buy. I had to travel 25 miles west by bus to go to a
record store in Pasadena to get my Marillion imports.

I think this is one time where a 17-year-old who's into pop music would be the best-available expert to make that call.

Though I think there's something to the idea that a more-expensive bottle of wine tastes better, not because the wine is better, but because it cost more.
