• Multiplayer arena shooter games

From Nightfox@21:1/137 to All on Wed Dec 4 09:03:03 2024
I used to like to play multiplayer arena shooter games a lot. Around 1999-2000 or so, I played Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 Arena online quite a bit, and later went to Unreal Tournament 2004 and Unreal Tournament 3. I also played Duke Nukem Forever online when that came out. Recently, I've occasionally wanted to play arena shooters online again occasionally - mainly Unreal Tournament 3, but over the last few years, I've noticed the list of online servers significantly dwindling. Now, I can't even log in to Unreal Tournament 3, and I've heard Epic has removed the online services for those games. I found that there are still active servers for the original Unreal Tournament (from 1999) though. I always thought that was a fun game, so I migh tbe playing that online again now.

I've also heard Quake 3 is still active.

Xonotic is a newer, free open-source arena shooter (available for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS). It's fun, though it's not very active online, unfortunately.

I have run servers for most of those at one point or another. I even ran COD MW 1 when it was out for a good while. That was the last one before they stopped letting people have private servers. Wish more games would bring back having private servers. Those were the days.

Since the original Unreal Tournament still seems to have active games, I'll probably play that a bit. I'll probably check on Xonotic sometimes too. I might also buy a modern version of Quake 3 Arena (I saw it on Steam for $14.99).

I also think it would be fun to join paulie420's Doom meetup game on the first Saturday of the month.

It's a ton of fun! I try to make it each month if possible. Next one is this Saturday. Starts 9pm eastern and people come go throughout the night. To join you basically just have to look up "20 for beers" on doomseeker. The server is on all month in case you want to test stuff before Saturday. Paulie also has a page/section dedicated to it on his BBS that has all the connection details.

OpenArena has quite a few active servers, as does Quake 2.

Paulie420 and 20ForBeers has a DooM server running with tourneys on the
first weekend of the month - should be one coming up, I think. It's
very fast-paced, I can't believe I used to play it for hours!
